Perhaps no one in the twentieth century had a greater long-term impact on world history than Deng Xiaoping. And no scholar of contemporary East Asian history and culture is better qualified than Ezra Vogel to disentangle the many contradictions embodied in the life and legacy of China’s boldest strategist.

Once described by Mao Zedong as a “needle inside a ball of cotton,” Deng was the pragmatic yet disciplined driving force behind China’s radical transformation in the late twentieth century. He confronted the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, dissolved Mao’s cult of personality, and loosened the economic and social policies that had stunted China’s growth. Obsessed with modernization and technology, Deng opened trade relations with the West, which lifted hundreds of millions of his countrymen out of poverty. Yet at the same time he answered to his authoritarian roots, most notably when he ordered the crackdown in June 1989 at Tiananmen Square.

Deng’s youthful commitment to the Communist Party was cemented in Paris in the early 1920s, among a group of Chinese student-workers that also included Zhou Enlai. Deng returned home in 1927 to join the Chinese Revolution on the ground floor. In the fifty years of his tumultuous rise to power, he endured accusations, purges, and even exile before becoming China’s preeminent leader from 1978 to 1989 and again in 1992. When he reached the top, Deng saw an opportunity to creatively destroy much of the economic system he had helped build for five decades as a loyal follower of Mao—and he did not hesitate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well researched and up to the point 10 May 2013

The author has given very detailed information on how Deng was fighting against all the barriers facing him when he has to bring forward his vision to the country. The layout of the story is very good. Although the intention of the book is for non-Chinese readership, I am afraid with all the Chinese characters involved in history, whether readers without somehow historical background on China's history could follow this book successfully.

1.0 out of 5 stars Be warned: this edition cannot actually be read on Kindles 11 Jun 2012

The book itself is a great biography. Amazon's promotional labelling of this particular edition as a "Kindle edition", however, is quite misleading as it cannot actually be read on any Kindle. It can only be read using a Kindle Reader hosted on another platform, e.g. a PC. This restriction is apparently imposed by the publisher; one can find this out by checking the small print link "Only available on these devices", but, given this is prominently entitled a "Kindle Edition", most readers are hardly likely to follow the link to check whether or not it can be read by their Kindle before purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 8 Jan 2013
By Qi Zeng - Published on Amazon.com
I saw one reviewer had problem reading this on his/her Kindle device. I use a Kindle Paperwhite and this book reads fine. I had read the English version and have to say this is a good translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faithful Translation of the English Edition 17 July 2012
By TeddyBear - Published on Amazon.com

Having read both the English original and the Chinese edition, I can say the translation is largely faithful. Some minor mistakes are corrected in the Chinese version. For example, the English original says Mao attended the First Plenum of the 10th Party Central Committee. But in fact, Mao did not because of poor health. The Chinese version corrected this factual error.

I read the Kindle version on an ipad and on a PC. Both renditions work fine. Never tried the actual kindle, so can't comment.

Cannot be read on Kindle, at least not on my DX. Have to read it on other device with the Kindle app. Should have been stated in the title so that buyer won't be misled.
