Book Description

1 Sep 2011 Crypt (Book 1)
Meet Jud Lester: Star agent with CRYPT, the Covert Response Youth Paranormal Team.
When a crime is committed and the police are at a loss, CRYPT is called in to figure out whether something paranormal is at work. Jud is their star agent.
Jud, unwillingly paired with new recruit Bex, has just landed his biggest case yet ... people have been disappearing in mysterious circumstances while others are viciously attacked - yet there are no suspects and a complete lack of hard evidence. The only thing that links each attack is the fact that survivors all claim that the culprits were 17th century highwaymen.
Can Jud and Bex work out what has caused the spirits of these dangerous men to return to the streets of London before they wreak more death and destruction?
A fantastic blend of teenage spies, horror and ghost-busting for fans of Cherub and Young Bond.

About the Author

Andrew Hammond began his working life in a cheap suit, sitting in the bowels of York Magistrates' Court, interviewing repeat offenders who always said they 'didn't do it'. After several years in the legal profession, Andrew re-trained as a school teacher. CRYPT is Andrew's first fictional series but he has written over forty educational textbooks for a host of publishers and he can spot the difference between an adjectival and adverbial phrase at fifty paces 'if only someone would ask him to'. He now leads a dual life: in term-time he is a respectable Headmaster of a school in Hampshire; in the holidays he escapes to his farm in Suffolk and writes gruesome horror stories. He lives with his wife, Andie, and their four angels - Henry, Nell, Ed and Katherine - none of whom are old enough yet to read 'Daddy's scary books'. But one day...

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood, Guts, Ghosts and Gore! 5 Sep 2011
By Book Gannet TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The world is full of unexplained phenomena and unsolved crimes. Sometimes there's one answer for both. And when the unexplained coincides with the unsolved there's only one place to turn. CRYPT, or Covert Response Youth Paranormal Team. So when nasty things go bump in the night, these teens will be there to stop it.

As a string of brutal murderous attacks terrify London, with reports of highwaymen, ghosts and ghouls, CRYPT are quickly on the case. And who better to lead the investigation than Jud Lester, top teenage agent and ghost hunter. But as things grow ever darker and more gruesome, and the police, press and public start demanding answers, Jud has more than enough to cope with - a rising death toll, a new girl to work with, and a difficult temper. Then there are his secrets, which if they were ever discovered could ruin CRYPT forever.

Fast-paced, gory, gruesome and smart, this first CRYPT novel is high action from start to finish. If you like your blood with plenty of ghosts, this tale is for you. Jud is a good main character - brave and (mostly) smart - with plenty of faults, which make him interesting to read about. And for the girls, Bex is great, every bit as strong and intelligent as Jud.

Sure, anyone with a reasonable knowledge of London's darker history will put the pieces together pretty quickly (as surely Jud should have done), but that mystery is a small part of this tale. Corruption, covert operations, horror, history, gore, guts, ghosts, mystery, mayhem, high tech, high action, highwaymen, bravery, intelligence, daring and risk. It'll leave you wanting to hunt a few ghosts of your own - but maybe not ones quite like this...

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting new supernatural series for teenagers 10 July 2011
By Tinhead VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
My son who is 13 years old read this book and really enjoyed it. He thinks it would be suitable for ages 13 and over. The story concerns a group of teenaged ghostbusters based in London. They investigate reports about a ghostly highwayman. The main characters are Jud Lester and Bex De Verre who take an initial dislike to each other but grow to be friends as the book progresses. The action is centred around Tyburn and concerns the supernatural (ghosts etc), but is mild horror and not too frightening. He would definitely read more in this series. He thinks it compares favourably to the Artemis Fowl series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Manga comic story in novel form 27 Sep 2011
By Steve Benner TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
"CRYPT: The Gallows Curse" is a full-on action-packed horror thriller for kids by Andrew Hammond. CRYPT is the Covert Response Youth Paranormal Team and I would imagine that you can expect to see more books featuring their ghost-busting exploits in the future; this one is likely to sell well enough to convince the publishers that there is a market for more. I do not expect any of them to vary much and I think readers can look forward to more of the same graphically gory stories, with high-octane action and clichéd personal crises designed to appeal to a teenage (and mostly male) audience as here.

The writing is extremely patchy with the ghost attack scenes being vividly and expertly handled but rather sadly interspersed with more mediocre and mundane passages that drag on interminably, while the author dwells at length on disgracefully silly faux-scientific explanations of the inexplicable (which really shoot holes in the essential premise for the book if anyone were to care enough to look at them closely), or else fabricates bizarre life crises for his protagonists that are little more than clichéd expressions of angst-ridden teenage existentialism (with, of course, the inevitable gadget-worship thrown in for good measure).

The most worrying aspect of this book for me though, is not the bad science or the silly scenarios, but rather the author's constantly sloppy use of language; not only does he exhibit an overbearing penchant for hackneyed phrases but his ability to be forever selecting the wrong word is really rather worrying, especially given his declared background as a former school Head of English. He seems, for instance, to be oblivious to the precise meaning of words such as culmination, prostrate, or even crescent moon. In a way, the book would have worked far better as a Manga comic, rather than a novel, especially given its ethos and subject matter. And at least then the cartoon dialogue would have had a place.

I expect that to many 13 year-old boys (and some girls) this book will make exciting (and nightmare-inducing) reading. It is altogether too patchy (and corny) though to recommend very widely outside that demographic.
