This book - which seems to be recommended by most lectures in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics is nonsense! It covers nearly all the topics you'll come across in soils but none of them seem to just get down to the "nitty gritty" and tell you what is actually going on. The examples are irrelevant and very poorly explained using values that have come from nowhere and missing large steps in calculation showing clearly that the author used to be lecturer himself.

Yes you'll probably have to buy this book anyway - everyone on my Engineering course at UMIST has a copy but all are in agreement that is it useless and very frustrating!

As an undergraduate studying geomechanics at The University of Wales, Swansea I found this book an invaluable aid to the courses studied during my degree period. The examples were clear and the author made the some what boring subject of soil mechanics seem interesting. It is a book that will no doubt be continuously refered to throughout my career.

This book has proved to be one of those which you just can't put down. This is primarily due to the fact that I can never be bothered to pick it up in the first place. Apart from that it has helped in my fight against the dreaded exams and have used it in all theatres of war in Civil Engineering. Buy it and you will never have another sleepless night for one reason or another and that is a promise.
