Product Description

Review

'This is one of the most in-depth commercial books on the OMG standards work to date. It is a usage guide for enterprise developers, complete with example implementations of CORBA applications and details of the CORBA services. I am most impressed and plan to promote this book as part of the OMG repertoire.'
CHRISTOPHER STONE, CEO of the Object Management Group.

'Sean Baker has written the first book that truly illustrates how to develop real world distributed objects and applications with CORBA. Expert OO developers rarely take time off from building systems to write such an outstanding book. If you want concise and comprehensive coverage of CORBA which will shape next generation distributed software systems, read this book.'
DOUG SCHMIDT, George Washington University

'CORBA Distributed Objects provides a much needed transition from the abstract world of the CORBA standard to the practical details of building component-based systems. Using examples that are both thorough and understandable, the book makes the significance and benefits of this development approach clear. This book should be key reference for any designer or programmer of modern distributed systems.'
JIM MALONEY, Manager - System Integration, Boeing

Product Description

CORBA Distributed Objects is a practical guide to the CORBA standard, the leading standard for writing distributed systems and integrating software components. Orbix is used throughout to demonstrate the ease of use and power of CORBA. Drawn from personal experience of implementing and using the standard, this book demonstrates the way in which CORBA can be used to write the components of a distributed software system. Its pragmatic, hands-on approach will make it an invaluable reference for experienced programmers and system developers with a working knowledge of C++ - those looking to acquire either an overview or a full understanding of the CORBA specifications.

This Book:

  • provides a broad overview of CORBA as well as the detailed technical information necessary to fully understand CORBA
  • introduces the principles of distributed computing and how CORBA permits interoperability across networks, operating systems and programming languages
  • grows a running example to illustrate the most important features of the standar
  • covers advanced CORBA features such as dynamic invocations and the CORBAservices; and also advanced Orbix features such as filters and thread suppor
  • provides separate detailed descriptions that will act as references for users of CORB
  • discusses some of the other technologies that can be integrated with CORBA, such as OLE and databases
  • briefly illustrates the Java-based OrbixWebT

Format:Hardcover
Sean Baker has done the obvious thing: As users are desperate for books on Orbix, why not reuse the Orbix Users Guide and write a book? It is purely a rehash, so unless you have a pirated version of Orbix without the manuals, its worthless. Whole paragraphs are identical (whole chapters, I'd say), No "dirty" tricks (And they exist, trust me) (Or hire an Iona consultant, they are quite good), nothing about name services, nothing advanced... Suitable for college students, not for professional programmers (Oh, by the way, it needs an update). A waste of money and time...

Granted, parts may be Iona-specific, but this book far surpassed any others currently available in terms of telling me how things work.

Format:Hardcover
Discusses most important CORBA concepts in depth and shows easy to understand Orbix/C++ implementation examples. Highly recommended for design and implementation of CORBA based applications without being a reference manual. Minor drawback: Too short on CORBA/Java -> worth a sequel
