PRAISE FOR A STUDY IN SCARLET
“Every generation should be introduced to the only unofficial consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most acclaimed pair of characters, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, have entertained and enthralled readers of all ages from the late 1800’s to the present day. The first book in the series, A Study in Scarlet, is an excellent introduction into the world of mystery and deduction that has become akin to Mr. Holmes.” BaltimoreReads.com

THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
“A brilliant book! I thoroughly enjoyed the 12 stories, each different, and each varying in their crime levels. I heartily recommend this book to you!” The Big Book Review

THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
“To my mind, this is easily the best collection of Holmes stories ever assembled. The variety of the stories are great and, as always, excellently written. What I like most about it is that it reveals many stages of Holmes' life.” John Darling

THE SIGN OF FOUR
“Watson and Sherlock are back in this delicious mystery, one of only four full Sherlock novels. This one has it all and is my personal favourite.” Melissa

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES
“The ultimate tale of the ultimate Victorian hero, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a true masterpiece of the mystery genre, and quite possibly remains the finest mystery novel ever produced.” Brad

THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
“More rollicking adventures with Holmes and Watson, all with heart, banter, and increasingly dark crimes. “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton”, it could be argued, is the quintessential Holmes story.” The Literary Omnivore

THE VALLEY OF FEAR
“I sped through this novel which in my opinion was a superb tale of mystery, fear & tyranny that stretched from an English country manor to the American coal fields.” David

HIS LAST BOW
“Here, we have a collection of eight classic short stories featuring the world-renowned investigator Sherlock Holmes and his faithful chronicler, Dr. John Watson M.D. I'm quite the fan of Sir Arthur's short stories, because each one is as good as a novel and they're the perfect length to read on the bus, in the bath or before going to bed.” Sociabookshelves.com

THE CASEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
“Saved the best for last, in my opinion. Another collection of short stories. Great plots. Good dialogue. Nothing was really repetitive from the older stories, impressive considering the amount written and this being the last published (I believe). Great read.” Kevin

More About the Author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930. Within those years was crowded a variety of activity and creative work that made him an international figure and inspired the French to give him the epithet 'the good giant'. He was the nephew of 'Dickie Doyle' the artist, and was educated at Stonyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where the methods of diagnosis of one of the professors provided the idea for the methods of deduction used by Sherlock Holmes.

He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. He was a passionate advocate of many causes, ranging from divorce law reform and the Channel Tunnel to the issuing of inflatable life-jackets to sailors. He also campaigned to prove the innocence of individuals, and his work on the Edjalji case was instrumental in the introduction of the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and later in life became a convert to spiritualism.

His greatest achievement was, of course, his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction. Penguin publish all the books about the great detective, A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The indefatigable genius of Sherlock Holmes! 24 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Just what I was looking for - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories & novels collected together for Kindle. The font & layout is easy to read, and I liked the period illustrations. There have been many screen portrayals of Holmes & Watson, from Basil Rathbone to Robert Downey Jnr. So I found it interesting to see illustrations of the detectives as they were first imagined.

Having just started reading this edition, I'm finding the Baker Street detective stories as intriguing and involving as ever. From what I've seen, this is a well-edited, cleanly presented and error-free edition, which counts for a lot!

With so much here to enjoy, this is an edition I know I will be dipping into again and again over the Christmas period and beyond.

If Conan Doyle hadn't had a hard time establishing a medical practice as a young man and filled his time with writing, we may well not have had the four novels and 56 short stories chronicling the tales of crime and detection that have continued to fascinate readers for well over a century.

Sherlock Holmes and his right-hand man Dr Watson. Hard to think of a pair of fictional detectives who are better known. Their dramatic and often complex cases with their compelling plots and the often quirky brilliance of Holmes' reasoning and forensic skills are absorbing reading.

This edition, enriched with illustrations from the original publications in magazines, is well formatted for Kindle. An excellent choice for the complete works

REVIEW EDIT: I have just noticed the book has an INACCURATE preliminary statement: "The spelling used is British except where fidelity to the author's rendering of accent or dialect supersedes this."
Contrary to this, American spellings are plentiful! And typos even more so, as per my original review...

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
The complete Sherlock Holmes makes a good case for Kindle! It's definitely not something you'd want to carry as a single volume book, but on Kindle it's great for both commuting and bedtime reading! And it's lovely to have the original pictures dotted through the volume.

Regarding American word replacements and spellings, in appropriate contexts I am tolerant of this. But in my own day and age I do not speak the same English that Conan Doyle uses and yet I would not want it amended because it serves to conjure up in the imagination both the era and location in which all the adventure takes place.

Regarding the plentiful shower of typos, this is a far worse crime! Sometimes there is an errant letter inserted into a word that wakes you out of Conan Doyle's wonderful fictitious world. Sometimes completely incorrect words are encountered in a sentence such that you have to stop, and work out what is actually meant, before re-immersing yourself back into the world of Holmes and Watson.

These aspects of the publication do take away from the experience because Conan Doyle's language, and its flow, form a significant part of the reader's experience of both the narrative and the characters of the era.

I suspect the typos are the product of scanning for conversion to Kindle - but shouldn't part of that conversion process be to proof-read the text before publication? Especially given the price compared with other Classics on Kindle! Perhaps the publisher will let me know their pay rates...

Nevertheless, I have pressed on and enjoyed reliving all the stories I read as a youngster.

1.0 out of 5 stars I expected it to be written in English 12 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Despite the preliminary information guaranteeing that the stories would be in good written English, they weren’t. Horrible American spellings detract from a good old English stories. Also it is off-putting to try and work out what L50 means - of course £50. Had any proof reading taken Place?
I was very disappointed.

I purchased this for my Kindle. Although an avid reader, I had not read any Arthur Conan Doyle before, but because it was such a reasonable price for the whole collection I decided to download it.

Well laid out and includes original illustrations.

I would definitely recommend this to everyone fans and newcomers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soft on Sherlock...who isn't? 5 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I grew up on Sherlock Holmes stories and film adaptions. My favourite all time great is The Hound of the Baskervilles. This selection with its wonderful illustrations was a gem.
Can readers get enough of Sherlock Holmes' adventures, no matter how many times they've read them? No. Such is his greatness, a reader can return time and again to enter his world, and discover new insights into this amazing complex character. Let's not forget Watson, with his forbearance and 'pawky humour' as Holmes once labelled him, who enters a complimentary balance to the Detective's character. And, for whatever strange reason, those who have yet to read a Sherlock Holmes story, they (when they do) will fall under his spell like so many others.
