Hello everyone.

I have the 2002 Muppets Christmas Carol DVD, which cuts out the really BEAUTIFUL scene between Scrooge and Belle. The reviews for that DVD, on Amazon, are also shown on the 2008 DVD reviews and a lot of the reviews, quite rightly, complain that the song that Belle sings has been cut.

Does anyone know if the 2008 re-release has the song back in or is it still taken out? I really want the full version (like my poor, old and tired, now black-and-white VHS) I but there's no point in me buying the new DVD unless I know for certain that it has the full film. I'd rent it, but the only rental DVD I can find is the 2002 version.

Thanx in advance!
Keely

Hi
This is what is posted on wikipedia for The Muppets Christmas Carol -

"The song "When Love Is Gone" was removed from the DVD release, despite having been featured on the VHS release. Henson felt it made the film too melodramatic. "When Love Is Gone" can be seen only in fullscreen but not in the widescreen version in the 2005 DVD 50th Anniversary Edition release."

This is the release that it refers to but unfortunately it's Region 1 - Muppet Christmas Carol [DVD] [1992] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]. On Amazon.com it states that this particular DVD is presented in both widescreen and full screen format.

Unfortunately I don't know about the 2008 version. The biggest flaw with Amazon reviews is that they're all grouped together, irrespective of which version.

Hope this was of some help.

Hi Keely
Keep an eye out for special releases this year as it's the 20th anniversary. I know Amazon are currently listing Blu Ray anniversary release but it's an import so will be Region 1. Will post here if I see anything.

I have got the Blu Ray version (Its region free) but the song is still not in the film. They have made the cut a little less obvious so i cant see the song being included any time soon.

The Region 1 DVD from produced in 2005 has both versions.

Disney's Intended Theatrical Cut in 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen.

Brian Henson's extended Home Video Version in 1.33:1 4:3 format. I haven't seen an image comparison so cannot say if this would be classed as Pan & Scan or open-matte (unmated).

If you have a multi-region DVD player you could try importing this.

I bought an amazon USA exclusive 2012 Combo-Pack containing DVD (Region 1 Locked)/Blu-ray (Region Free)/DisneyFile Digital Copy (EXPIRED/US ONLY).

The SD DVD says 20th Anniversary Edition but the files were created 28/09/2005 so it is the same old Kermit/Muppets '50th Anniversary' DVD with a new label. I used my PC to open the disc to find out if this was an older American DVD. It was.

For information only -
UPC (Barcode): 786936829563
ASIN: B009ESIGHI
USA URL: http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Anniversary-Exclusive-Three-Disc-Blu-ray/dp/B009ESIGHI
Note: Amazon Exclusive - now Out-of-Print. Contains Region 1 SD DVD.

Region 1 American DVD version (2005) -
ASIN: 078885996X
DVD Release Date: 29 November 2005

My 2012 DVD from 'The Muppet Christmas Carol: 20th Anniversary' edition is actually the 2005 DVD with both versions on it I decided to check the American Region 1 NTSC DVD reviews for their stand-alone 2012 DVD.

Because Amazon link their reviews even the Americans are confused!

Region 1 2012 SD DVD release 'The Muppet Christmas Carol: 20th Anniversary'
ASIN: B000ATQYT2
UPC (Barcode): 786936286991
DVD Release Date: 06 November 2012
Note: Details on amazon UK for the new 2012 DVD are for the 2005 version including the release date. The UK page uses the current 2012 ASIN (B000ATQYT2) and not the 2005 one (078885996X). The USA site has different pages for these DVDs the UK one does not work quite the same way. Given this information plus my disc in the Combo-Pack including the 'full' version then I'd probably risk it!

To reiterate/recap; On SD DVD if amazon UK have it right the 2005 Kermit's 50th & 2012 Muppet Christmas Carol 20th 'Anniversary' DVDs are the same. The SD DVD in my Three disc Amazon Exclusive 20th Anniversary Combo-Pack is the 2005 disc re-labelled and Amazon UK do link their page with the 2005 details to the new 2012 re-issue (2005 details with 2012 ASIN). Buying the 2012 Region 1 SD DVD with the 1.33:1 'complete' film is the best I can suggest. It was only ever widescreen on a letterboxed Laser Disc. The quality really isn't too bad plus you do get 5.1 sound on it. I'll never understand the removal of the song? The emotional impact hinges on that one pivotal moment in Scrooge's life. Shame on Disney! I do hope you've noticed that with the exception of Beauty & the Beast (1991) they have removed the added/completed songs from the main body of Pocahontas - "If I Never Knew You" (1995) & The Lion King - "The Morning Report" (1994); plus only the US theatrical cut of Bedknobs & Broomsticks (1971) made it to HD release. I don't know why they keep doing this?

UK Product Page (Region 1 DVD): The Muppet Christmas Carol [DVD] [1992] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

Good luck to all who try!

It would be nice to know if I'm right about the stand-alone SD DVD from 2012.

The 2005 American DVD sells for extortionate amounts of money 2nd hand whereas the 2012 SD DVD can be imported for just over £10! A big difference.
