Excerpt:

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

Everything was in confusion in the Oblonskys' house. The wife had discovered that the husband was carrying on an intrigue with a French girl, who had been a governess in their family, and she had announced to her husband that she could not go on living in the same house with him. This position of affairs had now lasted three days, and not only the husband and wife themselves, but all the members of their family and household, were painfully conscious of it."

- Anna Karenina

This is a sound collection of Tolstoy's novels at a very reasonable price. All the novels are navigable to individual chapters and it is easy to find your way around the collection. There are a few illustrations at the beginning but, to be honest, I felt they were almost put in for the sake of being able to say there were illustrations and they did not add a great deal. There is a quite lengthy biographical introduction to the whole collection but, so far as I can see, no introductory matter for the individual works. I bought the collection to read the novel Hadji Murad which is not always included in these collections. It was an enjoyable read but there were quite a lot of misprints and typographical errors. For example many apostrophes are replaced by dashes which is a bit intrusive as you read. I looked at some text in other novels and they seemed not to have that fault.
All in all the collection provides good value but these collections of out of copyright authors are nearly all reasonably priced now so it's a case of looking around and seeing which includes what you want and is formatted to your expectations.

Still reading this novel but it is heavy going and difficult to get your head around the foreign names so that you get a clear understanding of the characters and their intricacies.

I THOUGHT I HAD READ WAR AND PEACE WHEN I WAS 16 BUT I MUST HAVE SKIPPED A LOT. THE ONLY CRITICISM IS THAT THE FOOTNOTES (MAINLY TRANSLATIONS) APPEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF PAGES BUT THIS IS TRIVIAL. IT IS A TOWERING PHILOSOPHICAL WORK WHICH IS ALSO RELEVANT TODAY, AND MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT ALL SORTS OF THINGS, RELIGION, WAR, CRUELTY AND THE HUMAN CONDITION. I HAVE BEEN READING IT FOR THREE WEEKS (AM A FAST READER FOR 3 HOURS A DAY) AND AM ONLY HALFWAY THROUGH. IT'S WONDERFUL.
