The Danish comedian Victor Borge was a part of my childhood and I bought this album for my mother as a Christmas present. All these years later, he does not disappoint. The live performances retain their charm and their comedy, as well as their brilliance - he really is a very fine pianist, and works the audience superbly.

This double album consists of two previously issued albums.
Disc 1, "Caught In The Act" was compiled from 3 performances recorded live at the Plymouth Theatre in Boston in February 1953, and these are the highlight of this package. Hearing this again, I find myself wondering whether his variations on "Happy Birthday" were the inspiration for Gidon Kremer's Happy Birthday Variations?
Disc 2, "Comedy In Music" (the name of Victor Borge's stage show) consists of studio recordings made in 1948 and 1946. Think of this as a bonus disc, as without an audience, the studio performannes have less atmosphere than the live ones. Danes in particular will be delighted by the medley of Danish songs, which is performed straight, as is "Claire De Lune"

A great choice for a Victor Borge album, and fantastic value. If you'd like to see what a live performance was like, try the DVD Victor Borge - Live in Concert.

Victor Borge was a comedy/musical genius, able to become a one man orchestra at the keys. There are numerous beauties here, particularly in the live concert half. One of the funniest sequences is 'Happy Birthday', performed in the style of various great composers. The Wagnerian rendition is riotous! Borge's virtuosity enables him to lampoon any composer's trademarks with impressive accuracy, as well as bringing forth gales of laughter. This collection also includes the famous Mozart Opera, Phonetic Punctuation and Inflated Language sketch.

I must admit that I shed a tear at Borge's passing, because his quality brand of musical humour was unique. So here is a package of timeless musical lunacy to remember him by.

Not Now have put together an amusing and entertaining set. It is a vintage selection of 32 tracks of music and comedy. The sound quality is at times also vintage with recordings taken from records dating from 1946 to 1948. I don't think this makes the performances less interesting but they are not hi-fi sound. Victor Borge will forever be famous for the following "I'd like to thank my parents for making this night possible. And my children for making it necessary". The liner notes are by Michael Heatley and the compilation put together by Glenn Gretlund and Tony Watts who have a good track record behind them. The running times are 70 and 50 minutes. You will certainly smile even if you don't laugh!
