The Danish comedian Victor Borge was a part of my childhood and I bought this album for my mother as a Christmas present. All these years later, he does not disappoint. The live performances retain their charm and their comedy, as well as their brilliance - he really is a very fine pianist, and works the audience superbly.
This double album consists of two previously issued albums.
Disc 1, "Caught In The Act" was compiled from 3 performances recorded live at the Plymouth Theatre in Boston in February 1953, and these are the highlight of this package. Hearing this again, I find myself wondering whether his variations on "Happy Birthday" were the inspiration for Gidon Kremer's
Happy Birthday Variations?
Disc 2, "Comedy In Music" (the name of Victor Borge's stage show) consists of studio recordings made in 1948 and 1946. Think of this as a bonus disc, as without an audience, the studio performannes have less atmosphere than the live ones. Danes in particular will be delighted by the medley of Danish songs, which is performed straight, as is "Claire De Lune"
A great choice for a Victor Borge album, and fantastic value. If you'd like to see what a live performance was like, try the DVD
