I have been waiting a long time to chose a Blu-ray player.. first for them to come down in price, then for Blu-ray load times to improve and finally for the online facilities to reach some sort of standardisation.. I also used to have the problem that on DVD format, sometimes the disc extras offered in one region were much better than those offered in another region or sometimes the disc I wanted, was simply not available in region 2 at all.. Yes, Terry Jones:'Medieval Lives' NTSC DVD only, I am looking at you.. so I wanted to avoid that issue when I upgraded to a Blu-ray player.
Naturally, I was extremely pleased to come across this version of the LG BD640, since it is supplied already multi-region adapted for both Blu-ray and DVD.
I have tested DVDs from regions 1 & 2 (PAL & NTSC) with no problems.. I have not had the opportunity to test discs from other DVD regions or Blu-rays from outside region 2 however another Amazon reviewer (the LG BD630.. but the only difference between the two models appears to be that the BD640 model has a wireless 'dongle' for internet connectivity, while the BD630 requires an ethernet cable connection to your router) indicates there should be no problems with other regions either.
Although the region of DVD discs is automatically recognised, you do have to manually select Blu-ray disc regions however this is very easy to do.
It is worth noting that these players have a US plug (two flat pins) molded to the power cable and the adaptor supplied in the box is for the Euro plug (two round pins) so you will need an adaptor plug for the UK however this is a very minor issue, considering all the benefits (the supplier does include an HDMI cable). If you order the US to UK Plug Travel Adaptor from Amazon, at the same time as the LG BD640, you should be able to plug and play.
This BD640 is also capable of switching from 240 to 110 volts automatically if that is required, so it really is the mutz nutz for compatibility.. I'm delighted with it.

This is a nice bit of kit. It is very simple to set up, I did nothing it set itself up to match my TV. I am not sure if I was lucky or that was just the way it was. The picture is beautiful when viewing DVDs and even better when watching Blu Ray disks. I am very impressed.
In the front of the unit is a USB port that you can plug in a USB Memory stick. The unit allows you to play mp4s and music videos, There are connections for a HiFi unit if you want and can play music CDs.
Network: There is an ethernet network socket at the back so you can hook it up to your local LAN. If you take out the USB Memory Stick you can plug in a WiFi dongle. This is a bit big and sticks out obtrusively. It looks like an afterthought hence I have taken 1/2 * off the 5* it would have received. However the WiFi works well even from a good distance I am using it with the Access Point which is on the 2nd floor and the unit is on the Ground. The other 1/2* off comes from not having a Browser, and preferably not the Safari type as well. I don't understand why this unit allows you to get on the internet and go to a couple of film suppliers where you have to pay money to watch films and not let you go to, say, BBC IPlayer and watch old programmes for free. I would think there is a backhander going to LG to block letting you see other free content. This is really annoying. I also mentioned Safari earlier. This is because Safari will not let you watch Flash TV stations and a number of foreign stations use Flash TV . However this is a great product.

On paper this item met all my requirements. Having recently arrived from Canada and having a fair number of North American DVDs and Blu Ray discs, I didn't want to have to purchase two boxes. However, I am disappointed with the wi-fi implementation. Having to have a large dongle sticking out the front was unattractive but I could live with that. The well documented issue with the dongle having to be reconfigured every time the unit turns off is unacceptable. LG acknowledge the issue but seem to have little impetus in fixing it. In the end I connected it to my wi-fi adaptor but that might not be an option for everyone.
