A teen time traveler accidentally takes her secret crush back in time. Awkward.

Casey Donovan has issues: hair, height and uncontrollable trips to the 19th century! And now this --she's accidentally taken Nate Mackenzie, the cutest boy in the school, back in time. Super Awkward.

Protocol pressures her to tell their 1860 hosts that he is her brother, and when Casey finds she has a handsome, wealthy (and unwanted) suitor, something changes in Nate. Are those romantic sparks or is it just "brotherly" protectiveness?

When they return to the present, things go back to the way they were before: Casey parked on the bottom of the rung of the social ladder and Nate perched high on the very top. Except this time her heart is broken. Plus, her best friend is mad, her parents are split up, and her younger brother gets escorted home by the police. The only thing that could make life worse is if, by some strange twist of fate, she took Nate back to the past again.

Which of course, she does.

The Clockwise Collection is light science fiction (historical) time travel with a nice splash of young adult romance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 30 Sept. 2011
    Format:Kindle Edition
They say not to judge a book by its cover. But the outside of Elle Strauss' Clockwise is gorgeous and the inside is just as good!

The story is about Casey, a girl with all the usual problems: untameable hair, a crush on a boy who won't even look her way. Oh, and the slight problem of timetravelling back to the 1800s.

What's neat about Clockwise is the development of both worlds, past and present. Unlike most timetravel novels, Casey has a set course for her "travels": her hometown, two hundred years earlier. Every time she returns, events in the past have moved on a little more. Issues of slavery are brought to the fore as Casey - or Cassandra - tries to blend into a world very different from her own.

And if things weren't bad enough, Casey's two worlds start to blur together.

Inject a lot of humour, lots of action, and plenty of twists and turns (and the awesome Nate) and you'll have some idea of Clockwise. It's a really great read and I can't wait to see more from Elle Strauss!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Enjoyable! 17 Oct. 2011
    Format:Kindle Edition
CLOCKWISE was kindly provided to me by the author Elle Strauss in exchange for my honest review.

CLOCKWISE was kindly provided to me by the author Elle Strauss in exchange for my honest review.

15 year-old Casey Donovan is your typical shy, awkward teen with a crush on the popular school jock that doesn't seem to notice her. She also has a very big secret which no-one but her best-friend is aware of - she is a time traveler who without knowing how transports back in time to the 1800's.

Time stands still in the present when Casey time travels but she is able to feel when it is coming on and is left exhausted when it ends; unfortunately at a school dance while dancing (as a dare) with Nate MacKenzie, her crush they are transported back in time.

An initially disbelieving Nate handled the time travel well once it was explained and played the part of her brother Nathaniel willingly although protectively, but things went back to usual as soon as they were back in the present much to Casey's dismay and heart-break. I am glad Nate had the opportunity to travel on a number of occasions with Casey which enabled him to get to know her outside of school, he was quite sweet and supportive of her ability.

I really enjoyed both of the worlds Casey was between; I enjoyed the history of the past - their way of living, the politics, the people both good and bad and how she was able to adapt and cope which was the same as how she was dealing with the present and the issues a regular teen faced with family and school life. I wish we could have found out more of why Casey had this ability, and how she was able to travel between times? It is the only thing I found to be missing in CLOCKWISE; I wanted to know how it all worked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read 24 Mar. 2013

Although it took me a couple of chapters to get fully into 'clockwise', once I had, I really enjoyed finding out about Casey and her exciting double life. Casey herself was a great, interesting character whose sense of humour and bravery really made her stand out. Sometimes her lack of confidence in her looks annoyed me but I guess it just makes her a more realistic teenage girl. I loved her relationship with Nate throughout the book and all in all I think he took the whole traveling thing rather well! The constant crossing over through time, back to the time of the civil war was written really well, with it all linking together nicely, and I enjoyed finding out about both times. The character of Samuel, although I didn't feel for him at first, really got going and I loved Casey's little side trip and the twist which I didn't see coming. What the twist was, you'll have to read to find out!
The only reason that I gave the book only four stars was the fact that I felt some parts were a little rushed over, especially at the beginning and the end, and Casey's complete acceptance of time travel seemed a bit unlikely. However, these minor things did not detract from my enjoyment of the book and maybe they will all be resolved in the next book in the series. A great, light, fun read which I strongly recommend to any teenager who likes history and romance; it is an amazing book to get for free!!

5.0 out of 5 stars slightly funny, very clever and very enjoyable. 12 Nov. 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I regularly look for books like this because, even though I'm in my 30's, I find that I enjoy this reading level and i love time travel stories so I thought this was fantastic. Casey is witty, sarcastic, independent and also on the fringes like I was at school. This story has action, adventure and a bit of romance and I enjoyed the twist at the end. I am now going to start reading the sequel because I bought the box set of the series! Clever me, I saved myself £4! I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Fresh! 24 Sept. 2011
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
'Clockwise' by Elle Strauss is a fun, fresh read. Featuring an awkward teenage girl who accidentally time travels, the novel follows her adventures as she struggles to cope with both the past and the present -- and drags her crush along with her! The narrator's voice is sharp and witty, and you can't help identifying with her insecurities. A fantastic read for anyone -- adolescent or adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun light read 8 Jan. 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you enjoy reading young adult fiction you'll love Clockwise. I found it to be a fun, light-hearted, fresh book to read.

Casey is your typical average teenage girl - apart from the fact that at random moments, and with little warning, she suddenly time travels back to 1861. She's developed a strategy for coping with this, but then one day she accidentally ends up taking Nate, her crush, back with her.

Elle Strauss takes us perfectly into Casey's teenage world of angst about hairdos, clothes and boys. But it's not all light fluff as she covers slavery and the coming Civil War in 1861, as well as racial tension at a later point.

I did find the book a little slow to get into at first, but I'm so glad that I didn't give up. I couldn't put it down after that. It's good clean fun for all who are young at heart. I've now added the rest of the series to my wish list.
