Book Description

19 April 2000
A clearly written tutor book aimed at the classical pianist seeking a concise and coherent introduction to jazz piano. The book is divided into two sections: Section One concerns basic harmony, beginning with a preparatory chapter on scales, intervals and triads. It is followed by chapters on jazz chords, three-part harmony, accompaniment styles and basic jazz theory. Section Two is a study of advanced harmony, beginning with reharmonisation. It is followed by chapters on four and five-part harmony, upper structure triads, block chords, pentatonic harmony and the influence of classical piano music on jazz. This book represents the culmination of hundreds of hours spent teaching jazz piano, and should be an enjoyable course of study for anyone who loves jazz piano and who wants to make steps towards understanding the vast array of harmonic possibilities open to the improvising pianist.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for aspiring jazz pianists! 4 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This book is an exceptionally clear and helpful introduction to jazz piano harmony. It took me from the very first stages (with sections on scales, chord symbols, twelve bar blues etc) through to much more advanced aspects of jazz harmony (reharmonisation, five-part harmony, upper structure triads). Whatever stage you are at, and whatever you want to know about jazz piano, you'll find it in this book - invaluable! A great buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect voice leading learning tool 14 Aug 2008
By Paulo O. May Junior - Published on Amazon.com
The first part deals with voice leading and is very informative. It provides useful and practical concepts.I suppose it's intended for the intermediate level student.
The second part give us more advanced concepts like block chords, upper-structure triads and quartal harmony. I've never seen before the relationship between quartal harmony and the pentatonic scale - and it's well done here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarity and Simplicity for the avid learner 13 Oct 2006
By Vincent Matossian - Published on Amazon.com
I can't emphasize enough how great this book is, just go through the table of content with the understanding that each section and each chapter gives an exact, clear, and limpid explanation matching its title. I don't read it as a method but rather as a reference book, and while each chapter builds progressively on the preceding one, Alldis manages to keep the information self-contained and clear at all times, I really appreciate the compactness of the information presented, it's true pedagogical mastery!

I think that this book is for all-level piano players, but mainly beginner to intermediate, as long as you don't expect a 'method' format, the examples and exercices are to the point and kept short.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thorough review of chord structure 2 April 2005
By Piano Fan - Published on Amazon.com
Went through this book a few years ago. Very thorough explanation of chord structure. Provides solid jazz theory and harmonization understanding. Some of the lessons skip details information, can be frustrating at times.
