Product Description

CLAIT is the most popular IT qualification in the UK, with more than 350,000 candidates registering each year (and rising). The average age of candidates is 34, with a 65 per cent female entry. New CLAIT is being launched by OCR from September 2001, and this student workbook by Alan Clarke is endorsed by OCR for the new qualification. It has been written specifically to match the new course and is structured unit by unit to follow the qualification. The workbook contains all the information, explanation and practice examples that students need. New CLAIT requires a choice of either four or six modules from a list of 1 mandatory and 10 optional units; all 11 are covered in this text. The workbook is accompanied by a tutor's pack containing all the material on CD-ROM, and a dedicated website.

As a training manager who has successfully used the Bessant CLAIT/IBT 2 book with groups of students in a workshop-type situation (where the students work mainly under their own steam with minimal help from a tutor), I hoped this book would be the equivalent for the New CLAIT qualification. It isn't.

On the plus side, the book is very colourful and nicely designed, which is a definite aid for learning and will certainly keep students' attention, something the bland black-and-white pages of the Bessant book always fell down on. But the content is not clear enough for students to work alone for any length of time -- they would certainly need a tutor to guide them through the exercises and explain some of the finer points.

That said, this is a very good choice if you intend to use the book in a traditional taught situation. I see there is a tutors' pack which accompanies the book but haven't got my hands on that yet.

Very disappointing 11 Sep 2002
By A Customer
At a quick glance through, this book looked like it was to be just what I needed for my students studying for the new CLAIT. I was wrong. It is generally much too wordy and quite patronising. It seems to address new CLAIT in a very loose fashion and as such does not really seem to be specific enough for beginners to work through - especially on their own. In the IT groups I teach (I suppose pretty general), students start with differing skills and want to progress at different rates so ideally I want a book that they can work through at their own pace with limited tutor intervention. In my opinion they would find it difficult to achieve the New CLAIT using this book in this way.
It is surprising that there are so many grammatical errors and misnaming of Windows and Office components. One is led to suspect that this author does not have a great deal of knowledge of using/teaching Office. Very disappointing. I will not be recommending it to other tutors.

The book is very colourful and looks very nice. The content is quite wordy and you find yourself reading through a lot of waffle to get to the point of the exercises.

On the whole, as the first book aimed at the new CLAIT, I have found it is worth getting a copy. It is bound to help with your practice if nothing else!

One of the positive points is that it covers all the units in the CLAIT course and not just the standard Word Processing, Spreadsheet Database stuff of norm!
