Book Description

4 Jan 1996 Studies in World Christianity
Christianity's centre of gravity has shifted in the modern world from the Northern continents to the South, with Africa playing a dominant role in the resurgence of the faith. This work examines this global transformation of the faith from an African perspective and surveys the new role of African Christianity. Beginning with the intellectual legacy of the 19th-century "Black Spokesman", Edward Wilmot Blyden, who questioned the suitability of Western Christianity to Africa, and its resurgence in the 20th century in the Afrikania Movement of the late Ghanaian ex-Roman Catholic priest, Kwabena Damuah, the author examines the deep mother-tongue roots of large portions of African Christianity and shows how the faith has remained a vital and influential force in the continent even after the waning of Western dominance. He then goes on to discuss the prospects of this modern African experience of the faith, in the future shape of Christian theological discourse, in the understanding of the nature of Christian history and in Christianity's continuing social and cultural impact in the world, as well as in a reassessment of the place of the African continent itself in world history.

First Sentence
In an age when we have become accustomed to speaking of a shift in Christianity's centre of gravity from the Northern continents to the South, with Africa having pride of place in this shift, it might seem paradoxical that a book on Christianity in African life should begin by asking if Christianity is in fact suited to the African. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars AFRICA: THE SALVATION OF CHRISTIANITY 24 Jan 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Bediako's new book is the best to date on African theology. The author looks at the history of theological development in Africa. Many will be surprised to learn that Africans began forming their own theological evaluations of the new religion very soon after its acceptance: African theology is not a recent phenomenon. Bediako demolishes the ethno-centric arguments of both mission apologists and antagonists by conclusively demonstrating that the African appropriation of Christian faith as an African religion overrides all claims to an European-centered Christianity. Not only is Christianity an African religion, but its appropriation by Africans may be its revitalization. Christianity was distorted by the way it entered Europe, i.e., forced conversions and violence, but in Africa the true primalness of the Christian faith resurfaces. The only weakness of the book is that its scholarly nature will prevent many from searching its depths

1.0 out of 5 stars Clearing up comments from the "reader" below 27 Nov 2006
By snackdaddy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Must clear up and correct the comments made by the "reader" (author,I wonder?) below.

Africa did obtain enlightenment on Christianity relatively early after its conception ( Christ's death, if you wish to be technical). But this was due to the fact that ( Non - African) missionaries spread the word thru the corridors of the Roman Empire's conquered lands.

The first missionaries were, of course, Jewish. Soon after followed the Europeans. Christanity in Africa did not take off until the Western Europeans started a robust program to convert the pagan population of black Africa. And, that is the way it remains EVEN TO THIS DAY! That is why it astounds me when someone makes obvious , and probably malicious, statements as "reader" did below. Instead of recognizing, and THANKING, Western Europeans for caring enough to bring the Gospel to them, they try to hijack credit , and then issue devilish insults to boot!

I suggest that the person who posted the comments below ( "reader") please re-read your history books and learn the truth of Western Europe's gift of bringing the Gospel to sub-Saharan Africa. Then apologize for your malicious and ill-conceived statements below - it's the right (Christian!)

thing to do!

Thanks for reading, and God Bless!
