EXCERPT FROM OLIVER TWIST

"For a long time after it was ushered into this world of sorrow and trouble, by the parish surgeon, it remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all; in which case it is somewhat more than probable that these memoirs would never have appeared; or, if they had, that being comprised within a couple of pages, they would have possessed the inestimable merit of being the most concise and faithful specimen of biography, extant in the literature of any age or country.

Although I am not disposed to maintain that the being born in a workhouse, is in itself the most fortunate and enviable circumstance that can possibly befall a human being, I do mean to say that in this particular instance, it was the best thing for Oliver Twist that could by possibility have occurred. The fact is, that there was considerable difficulty in inducing Oliver to take upon himself the office of respiration,—a troublesome practice, but one which custom has rendered necessary to our easy existence; and for some time he lay gasping on a little flock mattress, rather unequally poised between this world and the next: the balance being decidedly in favour of the latter. Now, if, during this brief period, Oliver had been surrounded by careful grandmothers, anxious aunts, experienced nurses, and doctors of profound wisdom, he would most inevitably and indubitably have been killed in no time. There being nobody by, however, but a pauper old woman, who was rendered rather misty by an unwonted allowance of beer; and a parish surgeon who did such matters by contract; Oliver and Nature fought out the point between them. The result was, that, after a few struggles, Oliver breathed ..."

1.0 out of 5 stars Dickens 5 - Kindle Edition 0 22 Feb. 2013

Who in their right mind could fault Dickens; I certainly would never dream of it.
My problem is with the company who created the electronic version.

What slipshod practices are afoot when there does not seem to have been much, if indeed any, attempt to proofread the final copy. Errors and omissions abound: and that is only on the first tale I have read (The Old Curiosity Shop) so it is almost a certainty the whole book will be of similar ilk. I will not further tarnish the image of Dickens, or that of the reading experience, by continuing with this copy.

I'm off to the High Street to buy myself a hard copy by a reputable publisher.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Dickens 6 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As far as content is concerned, marvellous. How could it not be? I do find it, however a little fiddly navigating from one book to another. Also the Kindle treats the collection as just one book, so it is difficult sometimes to know how far through an individual book I have read

What a cornucopia, what an abundance of the finest literature in the English Language and how fortunate we are, how privileged are we who can dip into it whenever the impulse prompts us.

Although I do have a complete copy of the Charles Dickens book, never got round to reading them, Now after downloading the Kindle version am having problems to stop reading all the time. The price is amazing and the download took very little time. Suggest you buy this version if you want to read these as this is much lighter to carry around.
