Synopsis

This title includes a book and CD. This book is a veritable Genie's lamp filled with everything the aspiring animator could wish for! Renowned animator Eric Goldberg's detailed text and drawings illuminate how to conceive characters 'from the inside out' to create strong personalities. Classic animation techniques are analyzed and brought to life through this unique book and its accompanying CD that offers readers animated movie examples that show, in real time or frame-by-frame, the author's principles at work. Add to this Goldberg's discussions of classic cartoons and his witty, informative observations based on the wealth of knowledge he's gained during his 30-plus years in professional animation, and you have a tour-de-force guide to character animation with the classic touch. It includes a CD of animated movie files.

I see this book as something which will either make something click in your head or you could just not see the gold in front of your eyes and treat it like just another how to book on the shelf.

If you are looking for some clear examples of what makes fun, fluid and organic motion, this book will help no end.

As opposed to most animation books, this one does not even attempt to cover the entirety of information there is on animation. It would be a lie if I said it only gave info on character animation, b/c it also tells of useful stuff in storytelling and layout. The reason I like it is b/c it has such a limited spectrum, allowing it to be very useful in what info. it does give.

This is an excellent book, full of practical advice for animators and students of animation. Eric Goldberg is one of the finest animators working anywhere in the world - his advice on character poses and timing is especially useful. Buy this book and learn from a master.

A very practical book, full of gems of usefull advice.
It doesn't compete with Animator's Survival Kit though,
it complements it.

Superb book. Doesn't overwhelm you with a super detailed and academic look at timing and all that stuff. Just gets straight to the point, all the skills you need to know with lovely examples of them. And the whole time inspires and encourages. Definitely my preferred animation book of the few excellent ones out there.
