* This time last year Ace were busy preparing for the release on Big Beat International of "Nippon Girls", a collection of female vocalists from Japan. It ended up drawing a very favourable reception, especially from hip young club-goers with a yen for something edgy and different to inspire them on the dance floor. For the first issue to carry The new Ace International logo, they stray a little less far from home, hopping just over the channel to France, home of the 1960s yé-yé girl phenomenon.
* Comprising 24 tracks by 20 acts - Françoise Hardy, France Gall, Jacqueline Taïeb and the country's top girl group Les Gam's are each represented by two titles - "C'est Chic!" features many of the premier female stars of Gallic pop, plus a few French-singing non-nationals for good measure.
* The majority of the songs here are French compositions, but astute listeners will recognise some others in their English language originals. `We Got A Thing That's In The Groove' (as popularised by US soul group the Capitols), `I'm Going Out With The Girls' (Barbara Chandler), `Laugh At Me' (Sonny Bono), `Around And Around We Go' (Lonnie Jay & the Jaynes), `Tiny Goddess' (Nirvana), `He's In Town' (the Tokens) and `The Sha La La Song' (Marianne Faithfull) are each given a distinctive French twist.
* The compilers are currently immersed in the recordings of the yé-yé girls of Italy and Spain with a view to future Ace International releases. Also in the works is a collection of compositions by fabled songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, from whose vast catalogue `Roller Girl' by Anna Karina, `Laisser Tomber Les Filles' by France Gall and `Non, A Tous Les Garçons' by Michèle Torr are among this set's highlights.

Clocking in at just under 60 minutes, this compilation contains 24 classic tracks from France's 1960's Ye-ye scene. The songs are mostly groovy little numbers featuring unique and grandiose pop arrangements courtesy of the likes of Michel Colombier and Alain Gorageur. All of the songs feature sweet, lush and breathy girly vocals that lend an almost playful vibe to them, although this should not be confused with lightweight - this is pop music of the highest order. Highlights include the effortless cool of Jacqueline Taieb's 'Le Coeur Au Bout des Doigts', the perfect pop of France Gall's 'Le Temps de la Rentree' and Françoise Hardy's 'Viola'. Fans of 1960's pop, the Ye-ye scene in general and Serge Gainsbourg - who wrote some of the songs featured - should find much to enjoy here.
Accompanied by lavish liner notes that features biographies of all the artists and original artwork and archive photos, this is an exemplary release by Ace Records.

TWENTY FOUR TRACKS AND ALL OF THE GOOD. THERE ARE OTHER FRENCH FEMALE C.D.`s OUT THERE BUT THIS ONE GOES THJAT ONE STEP FURTHER WITH NO DUFFERS ON BOARD. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS AS THE START OF A SERIES OF C.D`s RATHER LIKE THE SWINGING MADEMOISELLE SERIES. TREAT YOURSELF ITS CHEAP ENOUGH

I first got interested in 60's French girl singers through Bridget Bardoe and this made me even more interested, so I was greatly pleased with the super sounding music on C'est Chic, I cant say anymore to truly recommend it it is magnifique!!!
