Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Hammer & Sickle is a single-player tactical RPG set in the spring of 1949. The player will assume the role of a top Soviet spy on clandestine duty in the British-American controlled sector of Germany during the early years of the budding Cold War.

In a world where no one is quite who they appear to be, the player is trapped in a hellish plot that could trigger a third world war, this time between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective nuclear arsenals.

Gamers will have to navigate a web of intrigue and make decisions that could determine the fate of the world.

Fun:
This started out as a mod for the excellent Silent Storm but was picked up for distribution as a full game and given a polish (hmm. A better man than I would work that into a pun).

I like the game, I like the maps, I like the story and I even like the Russian bias on the main character. Unfortunately the attempt to fuse a proper story and greater freedom onto the SS engine has been a bit of a disaster.

Far too often I had to resort to earlier saves to correct a mistake which immediately fast-forwarded the campaign to a downbeat ending. Other times I wandered around maps vainly trying to find the trigger for the next slice of plot. To be honest all I wanted was more Silent Storm/Sentinels with new skins and bigger guns. That's all there but it's been buried under the unwieldy storyline.

Ultimately what this made me do was re-install Silent Storm and play through that yet again. For the current Amazon price of a couple of quid you'd be nuts not to try it. There ARE actually guides out there that will talk you through how to play the game to get access to the greatest number of maps, but unfortunately it DOES require a guide to know who to talk to at what location and in what order, such that you don't trigger the "bad ending".

This is a real shame. Silent Storm and Silent Storm: Sentinels were total classics with brilliant combat and gameplay. This follow-up somehow, despite using the same engine, mucks up the combat. The role-playing aspect which sounded like a good idea doen't really work.
One of the most annoying things is the lack of ammo for the guns. Why would you save up $20000 for a decent sniper rifle only to have 10 bullets for it with no chance of buying or finding more ammo for it?

Absolutely Stunning 13 Feb 2006
By A Customer
I am a great fan of tactical rpgs, having playing them all, ranging from fallout tactics to the UFO series. But this game is in a world of its own. It beats all by a country mile because of the following points:

An absolutely stunning engine with great effects and graphics.
Features every possible weapon from the pre-cold war era.
So many different options, such as 4 different ways of shooting a sniper, or shooting through a wall, etc.
Great animations

And yes i have played the full game. I would recommend this to any gamer and especially fans of the genre.
