4.0 out of 5 stars Strong game with a few minor distractions, 19 April 2005
By E C (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Blitzkrieg is another game from the CDV stable, and as such bears strong resemblance to the 'Sudden Strike' series of games - albeit much updated.
There is much to like about the game:
- The units are well rendered and the environments beautiful. The armoured vehicles in particular are well drawn and look extremely realistic. There is a very wide range of units to control - including some very esoteric WW2 vehicles, and a full range of support arms - artillery, mortars and other crew-served weapons.
- There is a great deal of technical and historical information included in the game, in a sort of 'encyclopedia', which will satisfy even the most ardent WW2 enthusiast.
- The ability to carry units through from mission to mission, all the way from the start to the end of the war (assuming they survive!)is a nice touch, as one finds oneself becoming attached to certain units, and feeling pride as they are promoted or live through tough battles.
- Like the Sudden Strike games, it is (one supposes) a fairly realistic depiction of war - careless commanders can expect to see their units cut down in minutes by an unseen enemy, and units operating unsupported have a similarly brief life expectancy.
- Another nice touch is the statistics screen at the end of each mission, and the award of (historically accurate) medals to competent commanders.

All that said, the game does suffer a few distractions which subtract from the gameplay:
- The onscreen 'pointer'/mouse cursor seems ever so slightly 'soggy' and unresponsive, which gets tiresome after long missions.
- Similar to the SS games, selecting units can be a chore, especially with the infantry - use of 'hotkeys' i.e. 0-9 for your units is essential.
- Finally (and I know a lot of people might diasagree), the game is quite hard! Even the 'easy' missions can be quite tricky. I don't want to descend into technical minutae, but I do have the sneaking suspicion that the game 'tweaks' things slightly, especially with the armoured units. No matter what level you are playing, with whatever side, the enemy's tanks always seem to be far stronger than yours, the number of times and entire squad of 4 or 5 tanks has been dispatched by one of the enemy's, cheerfully rumbling around....

But these are minor points which do not much subtract from a very enjoyable game. WW2 enthusiasts or 'realistic' wargamers will love it, those of a more 'dramatic' wargaming bent should probably steer clear.
