Product Description

A comprehensive collection of the best contemporary CD cover designs, featuring many previous unpublished examples from the cutting edge, this volume includes work from well-known designers from Stefan Sagmeister (Lou Reed and many others), Malcolm Garrett (Buzzcocks) and Peter Saville (Joy Division, New Order) to Tomato (Underworld), Farrow (The Pet Shop Boys) and lesser known names and in-house teams (such as the RCA designers who worked with The Strokes and the Foo Fighters) who have used this medium as a widely disseminated platform for experimentation and free expression. In addition to traditional graphic elements of album cover art - image, illustration, and typography - "CD - Art" explores experimentation unique to the CD format: from handmade and unusual packaging and materials to textures, interactive designs and marketing incentives. It shows how designers exploit the two and three dimensional qualities of CD packaging to create highly collectable and unique objects that are displayed, handled, interrogated for information, explored for meaning and venerated by fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic reference in graphic art, 28 Oct 2009

Its not something you would normally consider as an important design ethos, but the evolution of CD packaging has come a long way. Of course, most of the innovative designs have been in postmodern genres, but its credit that someone has finally compiled a book on all the various methods of packaging that have occurred over the years.

This may not appeal to most audiences, but if you're interested in graphic art and composition, then this is highly recommended. Of what little text their is, the author explains the pro's and con's of various style DigiPaks, the need for a change of thought when condensing design down to a smaller scale, and how we compare our feelings with this smaller, tangible product as opposed to the classic 12" cover. The net result throughout is that although the feeling of flicking through 12"s will never be replaced, the scope for DigiPak's is extremely wide.

The book is a nice size and, in my opinion, very well priced here on Amazon for the amount of content you get. I've also noted that their are various other books available in this line of products, so check them out too!

4.0 out of 5 stars A small book with great content, 7 Mar 2011
This book is worth the money - but be aware, it is small by dimensions.
I knew the first edition - and was surprised when ordering this revised edition - my fault!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great designs, great writeup, 13 Feb 2009

Length:: 0:17 Mins

This is a small handbook-sized design book.

At 176 pages, it contains enough CD art to serve as a reference book. The best part of the book is actually the captions provided for the featured designs. They explain the goals and concepts behind, which set the readers thinking.

Also included are interviews with several designers on the challenges faced in this particular design medium.

It's a nice book.
