Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

As with most Exam Cram books, the obligatory warnings apply here too:
  • Exam Crams are not primary sources of reference to study by.
  • Exam Crams are not where you should start if this topic is new to you.
  • Exam Crams are supposed to be refreshers.

There! Now let's ask the question: Does this particular Exam Cram serve as a good last-minute cram book? The answer: mostly.

The CCNP Routing Exam Cram sports some of the snappiest writing ever to grace an Exam Cram book--which is good, since routing concepts are tricky little devils that you can't simply memorise. The explanations for why each protocol was developed and how they are implemented are well-written and concise. The occasional spot illustration helps flesh out your knowledge of how routers share information under each protocol. Later sections of the book deal with traffic management and routing updates and do it well, mixing a bit of real-world experience into lectures to give a well-rounded approach.

The bad news is twofold: first of all, the test questions are astonishingly weak for what is normally a series that sports some of the toughest questions around. Between that and a distinct lack of "Exam Alerts" to tell you what to watch out for, you may wind up wondering exactly what are the core topics you absolutely must have down cold to pass.

The second problem is more serious: one of the most hotly tested topics, the Border Gateway Protocol, is graced with a fairly confusing presentation, leading to needless confusion on the reader's end. If BGP is the final hurdle you must cross to get that passing exam score, the Cram could fail you as a last-minute refresher.

With these two drawbacks in mind, this is otherwise a fine book that does an excellent job of clearing away the mist of confusion surrounding many routing concepts. --William Steinmetz

3.0 out of 5 stars Exam Cram gets you there.....Just, 24 Nov 2000
By A Customer
The exam cram book states right from the beginning that its purpose is to help you in preparation for the Routing 2.0 exam. Having taken the old ACRC exam and needing to pass the new Routing 2.0 exam I bought this book to help me. I found it helped with everything apart from the BGP which it left me desperately short on. I passed the exam by scoring enough on the other subjects to carry me through.

3.0 out of 5 stars Standards failing, 30 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This exam is the third one I have taken as part of the CCNP, the others being switching and troubleshooting. I have used the exam cram books for the other two and found them to be extremely useful, with the content matching the exam subjects quite closely. When I came to study for the routing exam I naturally studied the exam cram offer, but was left quite disappointed. Whilst I am aware it is, as the name suggests, an exam cram, I would expect the content of the book to match the exam criteria. I found that several important topics were missing when I took the exam which wasn't the case with the other two books. If any potential customer decides to go for this book, I suggest they broaden their material beyond this book and combine it with other study aids. This represents a drop in standards in the otherwise excellent ExamCram range.

1.0 out of 5 stars Content clearly lacking the quality of the exam content., 17 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This book is not up to the job of helping you pass the exam and doesn't direct you to the actual level of study that you need to do. Granted you can't expect it to hold your hand but it should give you more detail. The point in the book about searching for 'braindumps' is unsatisfactory from the point of view of it undermining the effort and quality of the people taking the exam and opening it up to all and sundry and bringing the value of the certification down. It is WELL known throughout cert. groups that this is NOT the way to gain accreditation.
