2.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read but doesnt do its job..., 6 Jul 2005
By A Customer
At the time i enjoyed reading this book, but now i've got no option to look else where as there are some huge chunks missing from this book.

I'll admit that this book is very well written and explains the topics it covers nicely. However, the only problem is that I'm here to pass the CCNA exam, and this book just doesnt have the goods. The biggest problem (as already mentioned by another reviewer) is that NAT is not even mentioned in this book let alone covered. And as a the CCNA exam includes simulation questions, how can i can configure something i dont even know about!?

Also, the practice questions are too easy and lull you into a false sense of security.

This book would be good for a nice friendly warm up to the CCNA, to then move onto more (admittedly dry) but factual books. Afterall, the CCNA exam is an agonisingly difficult exam testing hard cold facts. I appreciate that no book in existence can satisfy the needs of this exam - but glaring omissions arent acceptable.

5.0 out of 5 stars I passed by reading this book!!, 13 Jul 2006

I found this book invaluable for passing the exam, I had failed twice using the Wendell Odom books and needed something that was more direct and to the point, containing all the information that you need and no waffle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended, particularly for newcomers to networking., 27 Feb 2006
By A Customer
I recommend this book, particularly if you are new to networking. I found it easier to read and understand than the Cisco Companion Guides 1&2 and 3&4, with plenty of example scenarios (good practice for the exam). I really got the impression that the author was doing his best to get you ready.
However, you will miss out on NAT/PAT configuation, so you'll need to learn that elsewhere for the exam (basic NAT theory is included.) Also, there are quite a few mistakes and typos, but I also found the Cisco books well stocked up in those. If you can afford the Cisco books, then they will be a great reference guide for a future career in networking as they include much more detail and scope.
I found Todd's book an enjoyable read which is something I appreciated with such a dry subject matter - he even managed to add a little humour. I think it should be enough by itself to see through the exam (bare in mind that I also read the Cisco books prior to the exam), but make sure you don't leave any gaps and that you catch up on NAT config.
Good luck!
