5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for learning C, 28 Sep 1999
By A Customer
-----------------------------

If your objective is to learn C, then this is (in my opinion) the best book on the market. It is written with this objective in mind, and wouldn't function particularly well (or badly) as a reference book.

I found it very accurate, (the few mistakes I noticed were non-consequential e.g. typos etc.), and it is highly recommended in educational (and C newsgroup) circles. It is therefore no surprise to find that the author is an experienced college lecturer.

If I had to summarise this book, then I'd say it was K&R but with more explanation. So if you've read (and fully comprehended) K&R you don't need this book (and vice-versa). If you've read K&R and understood the first few chapters, but struggled on the last few, then this book is IDEAL for clearing up your confusion.

You don't need any programming experience to successfully learn from this book, but as always, it would help.

Anything I didn't like? The cover - it makes it look like a boring college text book (which I suppose it is!) However "A Book on C" (one of many in my collection) has a really fancy cover and that book's not half as good - just confirms the old addage...

Who am I? A Microsoft Certified Solution Developer with 5 years experience, I have read more than 10 books on C, and purchased and read more than 50 computer books in the last 2 years. Of those 50, this is the first I've thought good enough to deserve my effort in writing a recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best C book for all., 28 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Many regard the "white book" (K&R) to be the C "Bible".. It's not. This is.
Explains itself thoroughly but in a non-patronising way. The chapter-based (rather than "lesson-based")approach means that it can be picked through as a meaningful reference guide rather than requiring a straight work-through.
This book will remain a useful guide once the reader is competant with C.
Recommended by my C Programming for Graphics tutor, and he knows a thing or three.
Some of the earlier chapters are perhaps a bit too simple for those who already know C, but there's easily more meat than veg in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for new C programmers, 6 Mar 2000
By A Customer
I used this book as part of a second year programming course in C and found the book very easy to follow for someone new to the langauge. It is not a reference book, but is excellent if you want to learn the langauge. You can buy a reference book once you know what you are doing, which you will after reading this.
