I am an engineer undertaking an MSc, and have been looking for something to provide a quicker method of inputting a lot of text from research material into MS Word. The reviews of these pen scanners has put me off for some time though. Having used this pen scanner for 2 days now, I find it is taking me less than 1/4 of the time to input my research material. I am a reasonably quick touch typist and this pen scanner is much quicker than me. I would strongly recommend this product to any full time student or researcher; however, there are a few negatives that the manufacturer may consider, and may put you off. The pen does not handle text very well if it is marked or contains detailed watermarks or pictures that obscure the writing. Great for most text books and academic papers, not so good for glossy magazines or where you may have underlined text with a pencil. The pen also gets a little warm after about an hours use (led where you tend to hold the pen naturally). There is no case or even a protective cap supplied with the scanner. This last aspect is something the manufacturer really should consider producing and providing free of charge to existing customers (hint). The final negative, the pen does not handle short sections of subscript and superscript text well; changes in text size for short sections is often picked up as random symbols. Be under no false impression, you will have to carefully check your imported text for errors and edit the product; however it can save you a considerable amount of time if you are doing a lot of note taking from books. Overall a very good product, and much smarter and smaller than it appears in the on-line images.

I got this today and am delighted with it. Bought in order to use for academic studies. Okay, it's probably going to take a couple of hours or so to get used to but that's true of pretty much anything. It's fractionally on the small side for someone with larger hands but, again, probably simply a case of how you hold it.

Positively, it is lightning fast with text appearing almost instantly in Word. It's nice to hold and of reasonable quality. I expect to have very few errors by the time I've got the hang of it. The light on the front is useful and there's even a small arrow to help guide you along the line of text.

I bought the TS1 rather than the 3.5 (wireless) version as, for academic work, you generally need to make a note of page numbers and other bits so not much use without a keyboard to hand. If you're going to have a keyboard, you might as well avoid the hassle of recharging, Bluetooth, etc. etc.

I had an earlier pen device from a competitor. This one feels like its streets ahead. Unlike the previous device, this one appears to be equally good for the left- and right-hander.

Assuming you've got a powerful enough computer, it should work an absolute treat. Haven't tried the text to speech as have no reason to do so.
