Book Description

1 Aug 2004 In Easy Steps
Learn to program with Microsoft’s premier programming language. No previous programming knowledge is assumed. With numerous easy-to-follow examples, this title explains the essentials of object-oriented programming with C# and how to build both Windows and web applications using the designers and tools in Visual Studio or the standalone Visual C# product.

This title puts the emphasis on learning by doing, and even novices will have simple programs running after just a few pages. The early chapters explain how to build form-based applications with an explanation of key Windows controls such as buttons, listboxes, tabs and dialogs. Next comes an explanation of the C# language, covering statements, operators, variables and data types, and how to interpret all those semi-colons and curly brackets. There’s a complete chapter on the essentials of object orientation. With the fundamentals in place, the reader is taken through creating menus, simple database programming, web-based applications using ASP.Net, and tips for writing robust and high-performance code.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs rewriting 13 April 2007
I own a number of easy steps books as I tend to find them a good stepping stone for new languages. This book is very poor. Way too much emphesis on the flashy aspects of visual c#, but does not build a solid understanding of the structure or language first. The author tried to cover way too much in a book that was way too short. It badly needed more example code. If you are new to c# i would recommend you buy the microsoft visual c# step by step first/instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars Old book, but nice layout 22 Jan 2008
I used this book from a novice, and although I have a programming background, found it extremely easy to understand and use.

The main draw-back, and it's a pretty major one, is that it is a book based on Visual c# 2003...and there have been 2005 & 2008 since then! It doesn't go into any advanced stuff, but it's deffinatly good if you want something to teach you the basics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great 10 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I agree with the previous reviewer - the book concentrates far too much on Visual Studio and how to make attractive user interfaces. Whilst good interface design is, of course, an important skill to learn it should be taught after you have learned the building blocks of the language.
I develop software mainly in C, C++, Java and PHP but wanted to extend my knowledge to include the 'new kid on the block' - C#. This book didn't provide what I wanted - there is nothing about data structures or information about the many non-graphical Objects built in to the .NET platform.
If you want to jump in and build Windows GUI's then this is probably quite a good book, but as an introduction to C# I feel it misses out a lot of very basic information.
Basically, if you already know the basics of C# and want to build GUI's then this is a good book for you. If you're new to programming or want to learn the syntax of C# then this probably isn't the best book for you to invest in.

4.0 out of 5 stars C# 14 May 2014

Good for beginners, need to watch as some of the example given in the book have issues with C# 2010 but can be figured out

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can Learn To Program In A Month! 23 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is genius. The whole series is genius. Concise code examples, easy to understand, no frills, just getting to the core of the programming art.

Some of the exercises are a bit out of date. But trust me, it still teaches you a great language. Easy to use, learning the basics of the visual based style of programming (using buttons and text boxes etc. Rather than console text/DOS style programming). On top of this I would suggest learning console programming from tutorials online. But this definitely helps! It all goes in (sometimes), and this book will have you doing cool stuff.

It is definitely a good reference. For a great language. My advice, get it. Do as much as possible and I look forward to using your programs soon!
