Chemistry 2000 for the new Millenium, 7 Feb 2001
Chemistry 2000 is supplied as a CD ROM. Although it did not autostart on my system, the main menu was easily reached by running setup.exe from the root directory.Chemistry 2000 contains 97 titles ranging from periodic tables to texts, tutorials, drawing aids, simulations and calculations. When a title is selected, a description is seen and the relevant files appear in a list box where they can be clicked on for installation or to run the software. There is an impressive range of titles to choose from. There are at least 12 periodic tables ranging from the garish to the innovative. I particularly liked one in which the buttons for the elements could be displayed depressed or elevated depending on the value of a selected paramter such as atomic radius. The package includes some text, Biochemistry 3rd wave is in Adobe format. I was disappointed with the Chemistry Reference Library which was, in my view, primitive. I liked the Chemistry Textbook which adopted a tutorial approach and I thought the Chemistry Laboratory was great fun, this provided a laboratory in your PC where you could do experiments. Chemistry 2000 is designed for all chemists but students will find plenty on offer. I was pleased to see clear and concise programmes dealing with molecular weights and balancing equations, both fundamental to understanding chemistry. I thought the programmes for performing chemical calculations very useful, not only for students but also practising chemists. Even though there is much for the student, the more experienced chemist will find much to excite and much of interest. The lecture slides on Spectroscopy and Stereoisomerism are well produced and can be understood without the text of the lecture, however I wondered if they might be of more universal appeal if they were presented as PowerPoint presentations.
