Product Description

The young poet Lord Byron had everything. He was beautiful, aristocratic, talented - and sexually irresistible. By his mid-twenties, he was the most famous man in England the world s first celebrity. Women flung themselves at him. Men wanted to be like him.   He lived for sensation and sexual excess, indulging his darkest cravings and scandalising the nation until he could only be satiated by a passionate affair with his own half-sister. Too late, he discovered that even a celebrity can go too far... This is a dramatisation of the life of George Gordon Byron who enjoyed a life of celebrity in the early part of the 19th Century.

Brilliant! 24 Oct 2003

This BBC 2-parter on the life of Lord Byron is simply stunning. Jonny Lee Miller captures the poet perfectly, and the girls are gorgeous. We go from Greece to London to Italy, back to Greece where he dies fighting for freedom. Fantastic. And beautifully shot.

It is difficult to make a biography of Byron boring but the BBC manage it in this production. The cast is peopled with several talented actors, but the characters are two dimensional. You can't feel the charisma of Byron, why women threw themselves at him and why people loved him despite his faults. This production makes incest and debauchary as pretty and tedious as afternoon tea. Many of the characters in the story of Byron were fascinating in their own right but I found that the only one I cared about was his man servant. Its a shame that it was not more like Desperate Romantics, also BBC which told a similar tale in a much more modern and interesting manner.

Disappointing 6 Aug 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A good cast, excellent production values and a decent budget cannot save this weak and decidedly idiosyncratic adaptation of Byron's life. It deliberately centres on the poet's weaknesses rather than those elements which made him an iconic literary and "political" figure. Johnny Lee Miller does what he can with the very limited script and the result is just about watchable but stragely uninvolving. It is strange to imagine how such a mediocre adaptation could have been financed. That said the DVD is a good transfer and both audio and video are acceptable. Still - what a wasted opportunity!
