5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond compare 12 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
I have long been a fan of the Cardinall's Musick and their singing of Renaissance music. Their Byrd series, first started on ASV's Gaudeamus and now on Hyperion, represents a wonderful attempt to record Byrd's complete sacred music, and it is being beautifully done.

There are many volumes to choose from, notably the three masses - a deservedly award winning recording, but this is my favourite. Among the items are Rorate caeli, Lamentations, Christe, qui lux es, the magnificent nine-part Domine quis habitabit, and the Audivi vocem de caelo.

However, the stand out for me is the Peccavi super numerum a 5, the last track on the disc. The blend of singers throughout the series is superb, representing a more heartfelt, gutsy, perhaps truly consort style that is possible with the highest calibre of professional singers: in this motet they draw back and focus their voices superbly, with the opening semitone rise and fall given not much flow and ebb, or indeed dramatic dynamic shading, but as the motet builds, such is the combined beauty of dynamic, tempi, diction and timbre of voice that one can't helped but be moved by this motet, which in translation reads as "My sins number more than the grains of sand in the sea".

Any CD from this series is worth the money, this one particularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent CD. Magnificent series. 19 May 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a magnificent beginning to what is a magnificent series. The CDs I have already acquired are all of the highest standard. The singing is outstanding and the recording technically top rate. This is no exception. My particular favourites are "De lamentatione Jeremiae prophetae a5" an early work which whilst not as "epic" in scope as Tallis' version is nonetheless a wonderful piece. You cannot disagee with a previous reviewer who said "Peccavi super numerum a 5" is the stand out track.
This excellent series does justice to one of our greatest composers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of British 7 Jun 2013
By S Maslin - Published on Amazon.com

In the annals of 'classical' music (whatever annals are), British music tends to be viewed as a bit of a sideshow. This is sometimes fair enough but in the case of William Byrd it really is not. His reputation is further unjustly downgraded by virtue of his being bracketed as "Early", the all-embracing term for anything before the High Baroque, implying an immature stage in humanity's music making, when composers were slaves to monarchy and the church who had yet to realize the supremacy of tonality and homophony.

Early or not, William Byrd deserves - nay, demands - your attention (as do Machaut, Dunstaple, Dufay, Josquin, Ockeghem, Lassus, Victoria - the list is a long one) because he was, quite simply, a master of his craft; indeed, the master of his time. We had to wait another century or so for Henry Purcell, a British composer of comparable quality, to turn up. It would be hard to find a unanimous verdict on any Briton who has reached such heights since.

What makes this particular disc special is not only its bringing together some of Byrd's less well-known pieces nor its impeccable scholarship but the absolutely superb performances. The Cardinall's Musick are one of those rare ensembles whose entire catalogue can be highly recommended en masse. Their 2010 Gramophone Recording of the Year Award for 'Infelix Ego' is merely the tip of a mightily superior iceberg.
