'This performance is unparalleled in its depth of expression and intelligence. The Cardinall's Musick unerringly leads the listener to musical eventsthat unlock Byrd's conception … crystalline sound reproduction ensures that every detail is captured. The imaginativeness of the selections for this disc attests to the scholarly expertise informing its production. In short, this performance brings us into the 'heavenly kingdom' longed for by Byrd' --BBC Music Magazine

The completion of this series will be a landmark, but dont wait to hear this beautiful disc' --Fanfare, USA

The works for St Peter and St Paul... positively shimmer with exuberance... the beauties of these performances are revealed: litheness, energy and intelligence' --International Record Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Another gem in an outstanding series 3 Dec 2009
By Sid Nuncius #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is Volume 12 of The Cardinall's Musick's complete Byrd Edition and it maintains the superlative quality of all the previous discs. The disc consists of three sets of mass propers devoted to Mary plus Marian hymns and motets, all taken from the Gradualia of 1605.

This music celebrating the Blessed Virgin Mary shows again why Byrd is considered one of England's very greatest composers. It is varied, imaginative, perfectly appropriate to every text and, above all, supremely beautiful. Every one of the nineteen pieces here has something interesting and individual to offer, and the overall effect of the disc is of a pure, limpid loveliness.

The performances are, as always from The Cardinall's Musick, simply fabulous. Technically perfect, the group show a marvellous empathy for and understanding of Byrd's music, and the combination of this and the excellent recording in a resonant acoustic which complements but never blurs the sound produces something really special.

Every disc in this outstanding series has been an absolute gem, and this stands with the best of them. Very highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars solid Byrd 29 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Many years ago until the advent of the internet I wondered why Tallis was always the premier tudor composer with Byrd following behind, the ansewer is consistency ! With my tallis collection loaded on a memory stick I can stick it in the old Denon and know that a touch of genius will be just round the corner. But with CD, Byrd gives us an earnest effort,a solid body of work but not uplifting,it never soars or inspires.
Byrd will always be played by me but I will always chose the keyboard stuff or the 4/5 voices.with so many choices these days and my time at a premium I could not chose to play this CD over his other work. 3 stars only Im afraid

5.0 out of 5 stars Another superb recording in Cardinall's amazing set 24 Nov 2012
By K. Nielsen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Cardinall's Musick recorded all of William Byrd's Latin-texted music in a stunning series of 13 CDs, many of them winning major awards. Andrew Carwood's vision of how to sing Byrd's peerless music is unlike the purely serene and spare interpretations that you can find elsewhere (as fine as they are). Here is Byrd sung with energetic, full sound by some of the best singers among the formidable early music experts in Britain. The result is utterly convincing. Of course, the voices are wonderful, and the intonation is flawless. More than that, the performances on this CD present William Byrd's motets is so unforgettable way that you will want to listen to this many times.

The Cardinall's Musick will be making its first US tour in 2013 (I hope). Go and hear them. And buy the CDs, just because they are the best. The latest in their traversal of Byrd's music was just released: The Great Service and some anthems, all in English.
