Product Description

Former Brigadier Piet Byleveld is recognised worldwide as one of the best detectives of our time. If you commit murder and Piet Byl is called in, your place in jail is booked. If you harmed children anf he's on your case, you’ve sealed your own fate. And if you’re a serial killer on the loose, he will not stop before you are behind bars.
This book reopens the dockets of numerous murders that this courteous detective has solved over the years. Gruesome, tragic, exciting – and with the satisfaction that justice had prevailed.
In-between we get the measure of the man Byleveld: how he matured in the tough world of the Brixton Murder and Robbery Squad; how he prevailed over deep personal setbacks; and the values this farm boy carried with him to make an unprecedented success of society’s grimmest job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read 23 Jun 2013

The journalistic style of this book suits the subject matter. While recounting his unparalled career, Ms Retief succeeds in portraying the humanity of Piet Byleveld. I have a question to him: why will he not recognise the great work done by profilers such as Micki Pistorius?

5.0 out of 5 stars Morbidly fascinating 22 April 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was hooked from page 1, morbidly fascinating exploring some of the cases that the famous South African investigator cracked in his years in the South African police. If you're into crime stories and forensics, you will love this.

It's a very easy read and impossible to put down!

A fantastic read with lots of spine chilling moments, making you wonder who prowls around us. I couldn't put the book down and finished it in record time. A must read if you were born & raised in South Africa in the 80's & 90's

5.0 out of 5 stars Realities of social dysfunction 7 Nov 2011

I could not put this book down! It was spine chilling to read all the accounts of murders which South Africans have been exposed to in the media. It is sad that society has produced such evil perps. Well done Piet, you are a remarkable human being, the police force needs more "old school" and honorable men in its ranks. This book allows us to indulge in the many of the sacrifices you have made for the sake of the public and for that, I salute you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! 12 Oct 2011

Bought the Afrikaans version of this book, as a South African living in the Unite States this was an excellent way to receive books from back home instantly! The author does a great job in telling the story about Piet Byleveld and the crimes he solved.
5.0 out of 5 stars What an excellent book! 4 Aug 2014

What an amazing book! I've always respected Pieter Byleveld for the amazing work he did in tracking down killers, but now "seeing" the man both personally and officially really opened up my eyes at what an amazing man he is! The book is so well written that you feel you know the man personally - this is a book that I've recommended to all my friends and if they are not lucky enough to have a Kindle, I've told them to go out and buy the book. This is a must read
4.0 out of 5 stars COPPED! 6 May 2013
By Chip - Published on Amazon.com

Piet Byleveld is plain and simply South Africa's most respected and celebrated detective. With his gravelly voice, humble manner and decades in the police detective service he tells Hanlie Retief about his life and some of his most difficult cases. For those who enjoy a true crime story, how its done, and the people behind the case files, this book is not to be missed. If there is one criticism to be made, it is that this book didn't contain enough of his cases and how he solved them. We hope it means there will be another book of his case files soon!
