Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Bye Bye Standby Expansion Pack - switch off even more appliances when not in use! These appliance modules simply plug into wall sockets to control any electrical device (up to 3000W).

Bye Bye Standby is the UK’s best-selling energy-saving solution, designed to reduce the daily energy consumption of electrical devices. Bye Bye Standby works by completely cutting power to the devices plugged into it when they're not in use, thus saving the power that these devices would otherwise have consumed in Standby Mode. Households in the UK now spend around 10% of their electricity bill on standby power, with the average household having up to 12 gadgets left on standby or charging at any one time (Source: Energy Saving Trust). Bye Bye Standby is a simple and effective way to save energy, carbon emissions and money. Simply plug your Bye Bye Standby socket into a mains wall socket and plug an electrical appliance directly into it. With the choice of either using the Bye Bye Standby remote control (available to buy as part of the Bye Bye Standby Energy Saving Kit) or a simple wall switch, you can turn individual or grouped appliances on or off at the push of a button (up to 30 metres away). It will even work through walls and ceilings! Additional Bye Bye Standby sockets, remote controls and switches can be purchased separately to suit your individual needs.

Bye Bye Standby can be used in both a home or office environment and can be used with any of the following: television, DVD player, set-top box, MP3 player, VCR player, stereo, printer, lights, games console, computer, monitor, phone charger, scanner, fax machine & much more...

Can we really afford to standby?

Excellent 14 April 2011
Easy to use, easy to set up. The best remote plug system I have come across. I would highly recommend it.

Just by way of warning. I had 15 of the earlier socket models. All with a date code of 0802. I've had an 80% failure rate on these and have had no luck with the company who make them. They charged £5 each to swap them out which is unacceptable given it's a manufacturing defect.

As I had quite a few old remotes I bought some of these. They seem to work better and be better designed and engineered. But who can tell if they'll last more than a year?

If I didn't already have the remotes I would have bought some cheapo ones from elsewhere, i.e. another brand! I have 3 really cheap ones from Maplin that have been going for 7 years!

Been using this brand of remote socket for several years, a smaller type previously, and more recently these larger units. Of the two I received a few weeks ago, one has ceased to work. I can't be bothered to send it back truthfully, and the other one is working. I use two to connect a swathe of PC related equipment in my study, connecting an extension socket off each of them.

So, here's my good/bad summary

GOOD POINTS
Convenient to use, saves bending down and switching sockets off. When they work, they generally work well.
Physically robust
Energy consumption - I have so many transformers (e.g. printer, router, DECT phone charger etc) that I hate leaving them permanently on for all sorts of reasons, particularly energy consumption

BAD POINT
Really only one major one. Reliability. I have purchased about 3-4 of the smaller variety, which have now deceased after a couple of years. These two I'm reviewing here were replacements for other ones that had also gone bad after about a year.
PS I don't think I am overloading them; and that was one reason for buying the newer "larger" variety as I believe the rated load is higher.

So my all means use them for PCs or other devices as convenient, just don't expect them to be environmentally friendly as advertised (I don't think that shipping plastic/electronic items from China that break and can't be repaired is enviro friendly). So don't expect them to work for ever, and in my experience expect a certain %age to go bad after say 1 year+.

I must also say that I have previously used a type from Maplins and they also eventually expired after 2-3 years so perhaps it's a technology limitation/MTBF limitation of the design, rather than being manufacturer or brand specific.
