Product Description

When a young boy disappears after school the case lands on Detective Frank Collins' desk. He's been keen to show what he can do, and reckons a high profile case is just the ticket to promotion. But the missing schoolboy is only the start. Another, much murkier crime soon reveals itself. It looks like someone has plans for Frank Collins - A gripping detective story from renowned crime writer Allan Guthrie. Particularly suitable for emergent or dyslexic adult readers.

Truly Original 8 Jan 2011
By JanLuke
Format:Kindle Edition
Bye Bye Baby is a novella, not a term I had heard of before getting a Kindle. For those like me who aren't quite sure a novella sits between a short story and a novel, a long short story if you will.

Detective Frank Collins is keen to work his first high profile case, keen to prove he's there on his own merit not just because his uncle's the boss. Seven year old Bruce Wilson goes missing and Collins is given the case, needing a female officer to help interview Bruce's Mother the only officer available is DC Erica Mason. The pair have history this will be interesting. So far so good, fairly standard Crime fiction material. However from here on in things twist and turn in a truly engaging original manner. Alan Guthrie conveys the fear, despair and sadness of having your child taken together with the overriding hope at the promise of being reunited.

The original tale was a short story written from the mothers point of view( as a bonus this is included at the end of the book) In itself a real little gem but the basic idea must have been begging to be extended. The story has been seamlessly fleshed out adding depth, background and a few more twists.

This is my second Guthrie offering and not my last.

What a Clever Story 10 Feb 2011

I don't normally read Novella's but this one may change all that.

The story opens with a policeman visits a mother because she has reported her young son as missing and without spoiling the story line I can't really say much more....

This has a taut story line, characters are lifelike and the story progresses at a pace which makes this a fantastic read, I will buying more of Alan Guthrie's work.

Excellent tale 1 Feb 2011

As I'd enjoyed reading another of Allan Guthrie's short stories/novellas Killing Mum, I started Bye Bye Baby at lunchtime for a quick read.

The story introduces Frank Collins, an ex bus driver who joined the Police and several years later became a Detective with just a smattering of help from his uncle, DI James Fleck. He is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a seven year old child. His colleague on the case is DC Erica Mason.

Allan Guthrie is obviously a talented writer and weaves an excellent story. He has managed to create a police/crime novella that blends some humour into a clever plot with an underlying subject which is sad and very often mis-understood. I will not expand any further as you can never tell what might give a plot away and blight the enjoyment of other readers.

The Bye Bye Baby novella is an expanded story based on another short story written by Allan Guthrie that was published in an anthology of crime stories. The original version has thoughtfully been included at the end of and it is interesting to read the story from a different character's viewpoint - in the case of the original, the victim's perspective whereas the novella is the Detective's take on it.

I have just discovered that Allan Guthrie has some full length novels published and both Killing Mum and Bye Bye Baby have whetted my appetite for more of his work - I don't know why I've never come across his work before but hope to enjoy more in the near future.

If you like crime stories, particularly from Scottish authors, try this - it's an excellent value taster and you won't be disappointed.

I love this wicked novella, thus tried my hand at a review in prose...
Bruce. Knowing his name, knowing lots of facts isn't enough. Or is it? Facts. Turniquets to the mind, tightening, loosening, solving nothing. Souvenirs of what probably was. Read more
