Product Description

A macabre discovery in a city cemetery…
A political scandal engulfing the city…
A samurai-obsessed swordsman on the rampage…

The severed body parts point to one man: gangland killer ‘Banzai Billy’ Boyle.
What lies at the root of his obsession with the bushido culture of Japan? How is he linked to sleazy politician and prospective MP ‘Big Jim’ McConnarty? Are the walls of Barlinnie Prison secure enough to contain him? Can police crime analyst Grace Andrew track him down before she becomes the next victim?

This conspiracy unravels in horrific detail as it twists and turns from the grimy backstreets of Glasgow to the cherry-blossom groves of Japan, where it reaches a terrifying and gut-wrenching conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aharp as a blade! 20 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
By the Sword is the latest in a long line of gritty thrillers set in Glasgow. The title and the cover may throw you; with the samurai undertones and the snow capped Mount Fuji which are not very Scottish, but this is explained as the narrative twists and turns its way to Japan. What follows is exciting and hard to put down thriller, filled with colourful characters and a complex, expertly woven plot. It is always great to uncover a new talent in thriller writing, of which I S Paton most definitely is, and I am looking forward to reading more of his work. The chapters are expertly fashioned and the ending is a delight. A great book, which is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read 7 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book takes us through the poorer areas of Glasgow and it's gang culture. One of the main characters uses a sword to despatch his victims, and this in turn leads us to Japan and the ethical codes of its martial arts. It is a gripping story from start to finish, with a very good character base. A really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 16 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a really good crime read from a new author. Having devoured Rankin and Brookmyre over the years, this is a promising beginning for a Scotland-based thriller. Told from the view point of a young female police officer, the story starts in Glasgow then weaves its way towards Japan. There's gripping tension in the prison scenes where the where the evil side of the villain is exposed to a young Glaswegian. The twist and turns of the story line ensure a good read and the insights to Scottish and Japanese cities and culture are both intriguing and chilling.
