This excellent historical series about the English Civil War is what the BBC now don't seem to make anymore. Anybody who has been unlucky enough too have seen the terrible Beeb drama 'The Tudors'on BBC 2, will know this to be true. At least then with drama's like By The Sword Divided the corporation tried to maintain some sort of historical accracy in their costumed dramas, which today sadly it seems has gone by the way side.
The acting and writing in all of these two series is superb. Of course its not totally accurate but no historical drama can ever hope to be 100% factual because it can never be that. But dramas like By the Sword or the WW2 drama made around the same time, 'Secret Army' endeavoured most of the time for realism, which sadly today some of these historical dramas have sacrificed instead for pure ratings and entertainment. You could say these are products of the Post Modernist condition and its continued undermining of historical accracy and with it the historian's work. That to trivialize History that the Tudors certainly does in large measures, is their attack on history itself is very sad.
Anyway, I recommend this excellent drama to anybody who wants to be informed and entertained about the English Civil War.
