Product Description

Product Description

The second solo album from Julia Stone features songs that were composed in California, refined in France and sculpted in Australia and India. It was produced by Thomas Bartlett who has worked with Doveman, Antony and the Johnsons and The National.

BBC Review

When Angus and Julia Stone released their debut album A Book Like This in 2007, they appeared to have landed from another world, apparently raised in the Australian woods amidst dream catchers and sing-alongs. Its follow-up, Down the Way, continued to mine both modern folk and the Carpenters, the siblings’ voices perfectly entwined. Seemingly unable to stop writing material, it has taken less-impactful solo careers to provide further outlets for their pastoral takes on the world.

As with 2010’s The Memory Machine, the reason for Julia Stone going solo is not made particularly clear by this offering. She’s still singing about California and its eternal summer of love, although she showcases a previously unheard maturity. Her voice occasionally overplays the shy card, but there is a new ambition to the arrangements. Producers Thomas Bartlett (The National) and Patrick Dillett (Mary J Blige) provide an edge that was hitherto lacking, with songs revealing themselves strong enough to have Alessi’s Ark and Laura Marling glancing over their shoulders.

The influence of The National stretches to a guest appearance from their drummer, Bryan Devendorf, and a cover of High Violet’s Bloodbuzz Ohio, which sets Stone in the unlikely role of gold-digger, as it swells to the most subtle of builds. There’s also established song-craft of her own: the flirtatiously catchy piano of It’s All Okay with shades of Steely Dan, while I’m Here, I’m Not Here is so fragile it’d be advised not to go out on a windy day.

So far, so pigeon-toed folk in the sand – but Stone knows how to busy the mix when pulses need to rise. I Want to Live Here drips with tropical intensity, while the swirling With the Light and the title track’s furious disbelief at a cheating boyfriend (“my hair was still on the pillow”) echo the fractured atmosphere of Feist’s recent Metals album.

But the elephant in the room is an absent one: By the Horns misses Angus’ gruffer harmonies offsetting Julia’s wide-open heart. Next time she might explore broader musical horizons (hinted at by a lush Active Child mix of It’s All Okay). This is more an intimate chat of an album, rather than house party fare, but it paves the way for a new collaborative album with her brother, promised for later in the year.

Well, she's done it again. I was a little wary as to whether Julia Stone could make an album as good as her debut The Memory Machine, but this is another gem. Her voice is soft and wispy, but combined with the piano, guitar and drums, she manages to create an epic acoustic sound. The album doesn't feel as dark as her debut, but I found myself able to listen to each track without skipping. If you're a fan of her work, it won't take much to persuade you to buy this. What I will say is, if you have never heard of Julia Stone before, give this album a chance because this is what good music is all about.

I pre-ordered this album because I understood the track You're the One That I Want was on it,and I have been eagerly awaiting its arrival. It was delivered this morning,I instantly put it on and what! You're the One That I Want is nowhere to be found!
I thought I would end up very disappointed, but after listening to it a few times I am completely won over by Julia Stone's gorgeous voice and songs. It is the perfect soundtrack to summer, and I predict I will be playing it at every available opportunity.

Got this the other day. Musically it's great, but I have a complaint regarding this deluxe edition and that is the packaging.
The box that the cd comes in is a total pain to open each time you want to play the cd. My wife gave up after bending her nails so I now leave the box open.
The box is also really big and if like me you have a lot of cds, then space can become an issue and this sort of packaging doesn't help.
And I can't see the point of the polaroid pictures which IMO are a total waste of space.

Apart from that gripe the music is really good and very well recorded.
Her voice on this album sounds as good as she does on any of her previous albums with her brother Angus.
Acoustic guitar sounds very real and I love the way that they've captured the sound of the piano

After hearing the talented and unusual voiced Julia Stone on radio,i couldn't resist this and i was not disappointed.
Gorgeous vocals, nice music and an aching and honest soul revealing itself, this is quality stuff.
The lyrics are quite powerful if somewhat enigmatic, with BY THE HORNS being a stand out for me,both lyrically and for raw passion.
Every track is quality, this is superb, honest music.
