Book Description

1 Nov 2000
A Common Lady
For years she had thought he was dead. Yet when Addis de Valence strode into Moira Falkner's cottage, there was no mistaking the sharp planes of his face, and the scar she herself had helped to heal. The young squire who had once been her hero was now her lord, a hardened man who returned to claim the son she had raised as her own. But Moira couldn't deny that Addis roused a passion she never thought to feel--and a perilous hope for a future that could never be....

An Uncommon Love
Addis returned from the Crusades to find his lands usurped by his stepbrother, and his country on the brink of rebellion. Determined to reclaim his birthright, Addis could not afford to be distracted by a woman--even one as tempting as Moira. Yet the only living part of his contented past lay in Moira--and his desire for her was more dangerous than his deadly battles with the king's men. By law, Moira belonged to him...but possessing her heart might be far more difficult.

4.0 out of 5 stars Skillfully woven! 28 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Addis de Valence had been thought dead for six years. Instead, the Knight had been wounded during the crusade, captured by pagans, and made a slave. He returned to find his holding given to another. His son, Brian, had been hidden by Moira, a bondwoman (now free). Moira had always brought peace to his soul somehow, so Addis declared she was still his bondwoman and set her freedom price extremely high!

Moira had always loved Addis. But she was content to tend to his fiancé/wife and see him happy. Now the wife was dead and Addis was back! Worse, he wanted Moira as his own, but not as wife.

Addis could not marry a bondswoman. Since she was not a slave he could not simply have his pleasure with her either. Faced with plotting possible treason and an unknown future, he knew he should let her go but found himself unable to do so.

*** This is the second novel by Madeline Hunter. Like the first (By Arrangement) readers will be fascinated by this tale as it is skillfully woven around them. Passion, romance, and treason abounds in this adventurous story of Addis and Moira! ***

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant conclusion to an impossible love 5 Jun 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Madeline Hunter's understanding of the human heart crafts a powerful love story. Addis returns badly scarred, physically and emotionally, from the Crusades to reclaim his title and lands. He compels Moira, a serf-born woman bonded to his lands, to assist him in re-establishing himself. Fully understanding that he has a duty to his name and heritage to find a strong political alliance through marriage, they embark on a torrid and deeply binding love affair. The characters are forcefully and compellingly drawn, both with a strength of character and purpose that engrosses the reader. Heartache and despair are balanced with gentle humour and steamy love scenes that delights, especially as Addis and Moira do find that love conquers all. Once again it needs be said that other authors have attempted the difficult theme of love across class distinction and arranged marriages or -alliances in historical romances, but not necessarily with the passion and compassion of this one, i.e. to the mind of this reader at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 14 Mar 2010
By Loupop
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Madeline Hunter is one of the very best romantic authors around today! This is another great read and as her debut novel, it's a great introduction to her unquestionable talent in this genre.

I've read her seducer series so far and I will read the rest of this series now. Her books never fail to move me. Her characterisations are so human and fallible and therefore quite beautiful. Addis and Moira are a wonderful pairing and Ms Hunter manages to make their story so compelling and consistently moving throughout the span of a whole novel. She has a gift for interpreting the human condition and imbuing her characters with a sense of realism and appropriate reaction to the circumstances in which they find themselves. This is a classic case of 'love conquers all' and it does so beautifully.

Wonderful!
