Book Description

7 July 2010 Ravenwood

April Dunne is not impressed.

She's had to move from Edinburgh to Highgate, London, with her parents. She's left her friends - and her entire life - behind. She has to start at a new school and, worst of all, now she's stuck in a creepy old dump of a house which doesn't even have proper mobile phone reception.

Ravenwood, her new school, is a prestigious academy for gifted (financially or academically) students - and the only place her parents could find her a place, in the middle of term, in the middle of London, on incredibly short notice. So she's stuck with the super-rich, and the super-smart . . . and trying to fit in is when the rest of the students seem to be more glamorous, smarter, or more talented than she is, is more than tough. It's intimidating and isolating, even when she finds a friend in the conspiracy-theorist Caro Jackson - and perhaps finds something more than friendship in the gorgeous, mysterious Gabriel Swift.

But there's more going on at Ravenwood than meets the eye. Practical jokes on new students are normal, but when Gabriel saves her from . . . something . . . . in the Highgate Cemetery, and then she discovers that a murder took place, just yards away from where she had been standing, April has to wonder if something more sinister is going on.

. . . and whether or not she's going to live through it . . .

Review

Forget about Edward and Bella, Gabriel and April are the top couple now. By Midnight has everything a good book should have: mystery, romance, anger and fear. It's an emotional roller-coaster. Its plot is very different and I didn't see it coming, it's very hard to predict. If you love vampires and mystery then this is the book for you (CHICKLISH)

Welcome to a stunning debut and a rollercoaster emotional ride of anger, mystery, fear and romance. This is a spooky, London-based debut Young Adult novel that cleverly intertwines Highgate cemetery, still haunted from sightings of vampires back in the 1960s and Ravenwood, an exclusive Highgate School where vampires just might lurk in the shadows. It's a must-read vampire story that puts the world of Edward and Bella in the shade! (LOVEREADING)

The most perfect part of By Midnight for me was that it encapsulates the whole confusion of being a teenager. The whole book is dripping in Gothic horror; from the architecture to the parties. Even the autumnal weather gives the By Midnight a kind of shadowy, murky glamour. The pace of By Midnight is perfect too, just the right amount of action and reflection and April is instantly likeable and relatable. (MY FAVOURITE BOOKS)

"A novel full of suspense, with great characters and an intricately developed plot, for readers who have a stomach for horror." (CAROUSEL)

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5star Dark, Mysterious and Fangtastic 21 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Feel I can't do a proper review without giving away any spoilers but I will try my best

I bought this book for two reasons. Firstly, I was drawn to this book because of the cover (I know I shouldnt but I tend to always go for the cover first) It really stands out and captures the darkness in the story. Secondly, it is set in England, I found this a great change from most YA books in this genre being set in America.

By Midnight its a very good read and really keeps you interested from start to finish. By Midnight takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that I found myself crying on a few occasions.

The Characters are a bunch of very interesting people good and bad. My favourite are April, Gabriel and Caro. April is very sweet and normal girl, who is dealing with all the normal teenage stuff as well and finding out some OMG stuff about herself. Gabriel, well what can I say about Gabriel is very mysterious and always seem to pop up in unexpected places. April and Gabriels relationship is a great read because it isn't all about romance, (actually there isnt alot of romance in the story) its more about the mystery behind the story that keeps the relationship between very intriging. Caro is probably my fave character. She doesn't fit in amoung the "Faces" at Ravenwood. She is funny, a little sarcastic and she believes in conspiracies.

Mia James (wife and husband writing team, Tasmina Perry an John Perry) has manage to creature a story with mystery, romance, anger and fear with twists and turns I truely didn't see coming

However, By Midnight loses half a star because because there is one bit (I wont say what) that it taken straight from Twilight nearly word for word.

Overall though, a fantastic read that I recommend to anyone to loves a good paranormal mystery. And I am really looking forward for the next installement of The Ravenwood Mysteries.

(Not suitable for younger readers due to some of the language)

5.0 out of 5 stars Cant wait for book 2 30 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
When I first brought this book it called out to me from my to be read pile but due to it being on the waiting list(this book worm has dead lines):o) i didn't get to read it straight away but when I did finally pick it up I really enjoyed it, so much so that it is still fresh in my mind when I'm now writing the review a few weeks later.

By Midnight was a slow paced novel, and as many know slow paced vampy novels are not normally my thing but By Midnight left me with this sweet taste of understanding and high expectations.

The main character April is a sweet character who comes off a little dipsy shes going through all these emotions and then shes thrown into this world of murder and mystery and is left with no one to turn too. April gets strong, she gets aware of her surroundings and she becomes interesting....I really like this about her and I like that she doesn't trust too easily either.

By Midnight is a great beginning for Mia James (Tasmina & John Perry) yeah I will admit there are mistakes but don't most debut novels have those pin point mistakes, me i looked past those as they didn't really shout out at me and it certainly didn't stop me from wanting more of those day walking non sparkling vampires - roll on book 2!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different vampire novel 18 Dec 2010
By rhosymynydd VINE VOICE

I bought this book for my daughter but stuck in the snow with nothing to read I delved into her Christmas pile....I found the book quite different to the Twilight et al series and new conceptual ideas of "nice vampires" that is currently in vogue. Instead we are presented with an unhappy teenager seeking answers and a good mystery to back it up. It is exceptionaly well written and the locational background is accurate. There are even some historical references of victorian novellas of real interest. I know my daughter is going to love it despite the fact that she is an english lit uni student - she needs escapist literature to relax with and this fits the bill. Well worth the read. By Midnight (Ravenwood)

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnetic and addictive 18 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Sometimes i buy a book for a relative only to read them myself so i will give this a shot from a males point of view. April is a school girl from Edinburgh whom is transplanted to Highgate in London against her wishes but it is because her father had be laid off from his reporters job. She is sent to a new school full of uber brainy and rich kids (that should also be uber bitch for the girls, you'll see why if you read the book). The story revolves around several murders that happen a short distance away from Highgate and April has a personal interest as her father is murdered by what appears to be a vampire so she decides to investigate what he was working on that might have got him killed.

I hate reading about the girl who goes all gooey for the "Hottie" who is a "bad boy vamp" so i was so glad to read a book that is more reality based and put vampires hiding in plain sight among the general populace who remain ignorant of the fact and I also like it that April was also very sceptical about them too.

Another plus point is that April and friends are so real and beliveable and not the typical Tall Blonde Gorgeous who falls for the mega rich billionaire who is also Tall Dark and Handsome who is also a vampire who instantly fancies the lead girl ETC ETC ETC

i don't want to give anything away which will destroy the readers enjoyment but when I read the prologue the nagging question I had stuck in my mind was:- IS the man in the prologue Gabriel?? and is April the re-incarnation of his wife who died a hundred plus years ago??. This is what kept me glued to the book wanting to find out if I was correct and also it really was a page turner because I genuinely wanted to know "what happens next".
