A complicated story and I'm not sure that I truly loved it 3 Mar 2013

I didn't realise that this was an old book which has been re-released. Ms Jeffries wrote this years ago under a different name. Basically it's the story of the H returning to England after spending many, many years in exile overseas. He had thought that his uncle was looking after his interests but in fact the uncle is the villain of the entire story. The h's family had bought the H's estate from the uncle and had lived there for 8 years. In that time the h and her mother had been healers to the whole village. The h's mother was a gypsy who married the h's father, a baronet. To cover the mother's roots, everyone said she was 'Spanish'. The h's father was accused of trying to murder the king and was put in jail and killed there. The h and her gypsy aunt, disguise themselves as gypsies and live in the village where the H's estate is (previously belonging to the h's father). The H has been given his estate and title(Earl) back by the king in reward for services and faithfulness to the king. In the background we have the villain who had previously sold the estate behind the H's back to the h's father. The villain then also framed the h's dad for treason and had the mother and daughter discredited as 'witches'.

At the beginning of the story the H is injured and is treated by the h. He does everything in his power to discover who she is but the h doesn't trust him as she thinks he may have been part of the plot to get rid of her father. The story revolves around the H trying to discover the h's secrets and she tries to keep them from him, whilst the villain is trying to get rid of his nephew, the H. The whole way through the book both main characters never fully trust each other and it really wore on my nerves, especially once they began they became intimate.

We all know that Sabrina Jeffries can write and she writes well, but I way prefer the Hellions series, and most of her other work, to this particular book.

***Spoiler alert***
A thing I truly hate is when the h becomes the H's mistress in books and I avoid books with that theme like a plague. Unfortunately in this book the innocent h becomes the H's mistress very quickly. I didn't like it as she was brought up as a lady and kept saying she wasn't going to give up her virtue as she wanted to marry in the future. She is referred to as the H's mistress quite a bit and even the King speaks about her like that. In the end when the H discovers that she's innocent he tells the father he will do right by her. I found it far from romantic and the H gives no thought to making her pregnant. Anyway that's just my own personal preference but I would like to have known beforehand so that I didn't buy this book.

Old school romance, beautifully updated 4 Mar 2013
By D. Bess - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Man, sometimes I miss old school romances, those that you could really sink into and lose yourself in. This is one of those books, wonderfully updated. A story of revenge, intrigue, a girl in gypsy disguise and a hero who doesn't know who to trust, this one is a sweeping romance, one you can happily fall into.

enjoyed 15 Mar 2014

I truly enjoyed this book.
Mina is looking for answers, yet is a mystery herself. She doesn't trust nobility, and Garett trusts no one.
Garett is out for revenge and that is his purpose in life.
Mina is a great character in this book. She make Garett think, she also distracts him. He wants to protect her. Her aunt, Tamara is spicy and protective. I loved her, and her character.
I do love how the story was played out, with so many secrets and the thirst for revenge. Mina and Garett try to fight their attraction, well Mina tries to fight against him. She wants him but she wants his love not just affection. The ending was great but I think it would've been better if Garett's uncle received a different punishment. I would like to know more about what happens with his aunt after as well.

I received a signed copy from the author, from a contest.

I enjoyed this book very much, as much for its story line as for the author's writing style. I certainly will be reading more of her books as they come out.
