Product Description

Product Description

In a response to the sleek forms and perfect angles of late-1990s objects, many of today's artists are returning to handmade work such as hand lettering, hand drawing, and hand sewing. "By Hand" features an international collection of the most noteworthy artists and shows their work in detailed photography and insightful texts.

Excellent! 7 Feb 2009
Format:Hardcover
This book is lovely. Some great quality pictures show examples of a large range of textile artists work. Written text directly from the artist - very good reference for research! introductory text at the front of the book discusses the use fo textiles within art - I found this very informative and good opening to the book.

nearly... 10 Dec 2009
By SD
Format:Hardcover
This book provides a good starting point for investigations into craft practices adopted by contemporary art. However it is more of a coffee table book and doesn't investigate the use of craft at any notable length. Artist bios are interesting, though i have hardly heard of any of them before, it might have been better to use a few more recognisable artists using craft (perhaps Greyson Perry or Simon Starling) along with the less known artists.

Good content, but poor quality images 11 Dec 2009
By Emily Schroeder - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I was intrigued by this book the instant i saw the title. I make pots and I am always on the hunt for books that survey craft artists. I like the content and the artists that are shown in this book, but some of the quality of images is downright appalling. It makes me feel like no one was checking up on this and they hired some 12 year old with a disposable camera to take images for some of the artists. I am glad to get the names of some of the artists, but i really feel its a shame for all parties to not aspire to a higher quality of representation of the work shown here. Definitely not a best foot forward, especially considering this is a book about craft/craftsmanship.

A simply gorgeous book 4 July 2007
By Stephanie Cake - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been eyeballing this book for quite some time and finally added to my collection.

I have a BFA in Crafts and am always on the lookout for books which address craft as a fine art form versus craft as a DIY/hobby. By Hand definitely covers it.
