Eric Lomax' story is well known, but this should not excuse anyone from reading this book, which ought to be on the National Curriculum. If ever there was a book that so precisely illustrated the futility or war and hatred, this is it.
This remarkable man shares with us in painful detail his experience at the mercy of the Japanese on the Burma Railway during WWII. Such cruelty towards a fellow human being seems unimaginable. All the more remarkable is the power of love and forgiveness which serves as a lesson to us all.
I have given this five stars because this book is a page-turner in every sense. I could not put it down until I reached the end.
