Product Description

Train them . . . Arm them . . . Then turn them loose on the zombies!

At the tail end of 1917, the Germans introduced a new type of gas to the battlefield, T-Leiche, or "corpse gas," and changed the face of the war by resurrecting the bodies of the dead, giving the enemy an almost unlimited source of fresh troops.

When the American ace Major Jack Freeman--poster boy for the war against the Kaiser's undead army of shamblers--is downed over enemy lines and taken captive, veteran Captain Michael "Madman" Burke is the only man brave and foolish enough to accept the mission to recover Freeman. Burke assembles a team of disparate members, from his right-hand man, Sergeant Moore, to big-game-hunter-turned-soldier Clayton Manning, who funds the mission for an opportunity to confront this most dangerous zombie game, to professor Dan Graves, one of Tesla's top men and the resident authority on all things supernatural. With the help of a highly advanced British dirigible war machine to infiltrate enemy territory, the team faces incredible danger as it struggles to reach the prison camp and strike at the heart of the enemy.

But they are pitted against the most deadly enemy of all: Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron. Having risen from the dead with his abilities enhanced but his mind on the brink of madness, Richthofen has plans for victory that give no quarter to soldiers or civilians.

4.0 out of 5 stars World War 1 Zombies? Yes Please. 29 May 2012
Format:Paperback
I am a sucker for well done pulp horror, but how was I going to take to pulp horror novel that throws zombies, Zeppelins, and tally ho dashing World War One heroics? I took it really well in fact, although that was no surprise really as I have been a fan Joseph's writing since I read his excellent Riverwatch many many moons ago.

By The Blood of Heroes, follows a similar line to that of Kim Newman's The Bloody Red Barron, in that it mixes horror, steampunk, and fantasy into the real world setting of World War One. However, where Kim's book is full of pop culture references, and nods to other books, By The blood of Heroes is a stripped of these references and jumps straight into the action. While the two novels may share the same maternal gene pool, it would be unfair to compare the two books. I am a big fan of both books By The Blood of Heroes stands on it's own two feet.

The action kicks of straight away and introduces us to the novels main players, the world weary Captain Michael "Madman" Burke, tasked with saving the spiffing and dashing Major Jack Freeman from the clutches of the dastardly Germans. The action never lets up, and by the time you turn the last page you will have finished an extremely entraining and fun novel. That is packed to the gunnels with some brilliant set pieces, from the opening trench battle, where we are introduced to a new breed of shamblers, to the breathtaking arieal battle that takes palce as our rescue team "chute" in on their rescue mission. Those of you, who like myself, have become jaded with the zombie genre, fear not. This is not a zombie book. This is more of a full on action packed adventure story that just happens to have the undead as a supporting cast.

The steampunk setting of the novel is great, and Joseph has a vivid imagination, giant burrowing tanks, mechanical hands, huge airships, and lots and lots of Baron Frankenstein style machines that spark electricity add to the enjoyment of the book.

With books of this sort it is all well and good having a good action packed story, for it to really succeed it needs a decent and strong cast of characters. This is something that Joseph realises and he has populated the book with some really interesting characters.

I do one criticism of the novel, while the book is full of great characters, I did find it hard to place the nationality of the cast. There was no sense of Americans being Americans, and the British being British. Personally I would have liked a greater sense of nationality.

By The Blood of Heroes is a great book, and I am sure you will have as much fun reading this as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Undead Horror Hits the Trenches 15 May 2012
By Vincenzo L. Falcone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
NO SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED IN THIS REVIEW.

Joseph Nassise has tapped into a real gold mine with this one; there have been many stories written that use the undead zombie plague as the backbone on their works, including Star Wars, Marvel Superheros and even Ancient Roman & Cowboy tales... now, we bring the horror of flesh eating ghouls to the trenches of World War I - only this time, the zombies are a bio weapon of the Kaiser's Imperial German Army, and their research in that arena does not stop with the formation of the shambling Death Troops.

BY the BLOOD of HEROES is a fast-paced action / horror story that made me feel like THE GUNS of NAVARONE had met and merged with NIGHT of the LIVING DEAD. It reads quickly, and is full of action and a touch of suspense. The characters are believable and more importantly - Likeable. The heroes are truly heroic, but also very human (I mean that in more than one way). The villains are truly despicable, and play their parts to perfection.

The plot in and of itself is interesting and fun to watch unfold, as a hastily assembled unit of men are assembled to go behind enemy lines and do what they need to do - naturally, the bad guys have more surprises in store for them than what they have come to tackle, and once the action starts, it moves at full throttle, and doesn't stop from there.

I began to worry as I was reading this one, I was running out of pages to turn, but there was so much going on, I was worried it would just grind to a sudden, unrealistic end and that would be it... but no! This book leaves you right where it means to - set up to begin a full throttle run again once the next book comes out. I truly enjoyed this read, and am eagerly awaiting the next installment.

To Mr. Nasise I say this, 'I am undying to read THE GREAT UNDEAD WAR: BOOK II'. Well done, sir, you have a new fan in this guy right here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zombie's in the trenches! 1 July 2012
By Rich The Reviewer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I picked up this book thinking it had two interesting things going for it. 1) It was a action war story and 2) It had zombies. I was right on both accounts. Most times I see that the first book in a series tends to be slow going as it introduces the characters are and all the background. Well, this book is not slow. It introduces the people and situations fairly quickly and easily for that matter. The story telling is an easy and fast read. In that the author does not go into long scientfic babble of viruses and the such that have created the zombies or shamblers as they are called. He lets you know and then moves on. Now this also is true for the war. This story takes place in an alternate version of World War 1 and there are one or two things I may have missed as far as explanation but that doesn't take away from the actual history but lends itself in just reading up on the real war.
Anyway...for the lovers of Zombies and Alternate History, pick up Book 1, read and enjoy and lets hope book 2 comes out fairly quick, cause...well just read the book...you'll see.

5.0 out of 5 stars this book is worth it and then some 27 Jun 2012

I've devoured about thirty or so zombie genre books in the past few months, with that said, this is my first review and rating of all of them. Yes this book is that good. The alternative history, the combat scenes, in the air or ground, just awesome. While I wait for the next series, I'm going to tackle this authors Templar books.

For the price of the kindle edition, this is worth more.
