"So intriguing... cleverly woven together and tensely written" - Sunday Times

"Excellent chilling drama" Manchester Evening News

This is a gripping romantic thriller, packed with tension and danger. From the first page, when a man covered with blood is running the wrong way down a motorway, the action never stops.

A bloodstained man runs half naked down a motorway at night dodging high-speed traffic - and worse. Cornered by police, admitted to a psychiatric ward suffering from trauma-induced amnesia, all he can recall is a detailed knowledge of sophisticated weaponry and military techniques that indicates a background in terrorism.

When two armed soldiers guarding his room are murdered and Dr Elizabeth Santer, the psychiatrist assigned to his case, is abducted at gunpoint a desperate hunt begins for a dangerous killer.

Terrorist - murderer - kidnapper - thief whatever he is, he remembers a town in Wales and it is to Brecon he drags Elizabeth Santer with the security forces in all-out pursuit. There, a violent and bloody confrontation exposes a horrifying story of treachery and political cover-up.

Is Elizabeth in the hands of a homicidal terrorist or an innocent pawn? Her life depends on the right answer.

Synopsis

A bloodstained man runs half naked down a motorway at night dodging high-speed traffic - and worse. Cornered by police, admitted to a psychiatric ward suffering from trauma-induced amnesia, all he can recall is a detailed knowledge of sophisticated weaponry and military techniques that indicates a background in terrorism. When two armed soldiers guarding his room are murdered and Dr Elizabeth Santer, the psychiatrist assigned to his case, is abducted at gunpoint a desperate hunt begins for a dangerous killer. Terrorist - murderer - kidnapper - thief whatever he is, he remembers a town in Wales and it is to Wales he drags Elizabeth Santer with the security forces in all-out pursuit. There, a violent and bloody confrontation exposes a horrifying story of treachery and political cover-up. Is Elizabeth in the hands of a homicidal terrorist or an innocent pawn? Her life depends on the right answer. He continued to dodge between vans, trucks, cars; fearful lest his assailants had reached the motorway. Running - running - his heart hammering so fiercely he wondered why it hadn't burst.

Blood surged through his veins, the drumbeat of pulses beating time with his footfalls as he swerved from lane to lane, and still they kept coming. Weaving...roaring...blasting...until a single soft sound alerted every fibre of his being. His eyes strained. He searched wildly for safety. There was none. He ducked as another crack echoed towards him...

More About the Author

Katherine John is a very much darker person than Catrin Collier. Interested in the human psyche, and the reasons that motivate people to commit crimes.
She is fortunate to have many police officer and pathologist friends, who have given her insights into their work and the trauma that is part of their daily lives. Trauma that would drive many lesser people to insanity - and officers like her creation Peter Collins to make highly inappropriate remarks at inappropriate times.
She is often invited to talk about creative writing, writing crime and the events that inspired her crime books. Prisons and prisoners are among her favourite venues and audiences because on leaving she always feels that she has learned far more from the inmates than they have from her.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'By Any Name' The Best Thriller of 2006? 19 Mar 2006
Format:Paperback
'By Any Name' combines the sophistication of a Tom Clancy opus, the intrigue of a James Patterson mystery and the suspense of a John Grisham story into a cracking page turner.
Katherine John delivers authentic plot development and a cast of stong and believable characters, making 'By Any Name' several cuts above those thrillers reliant on co-incidence and populated with caricatures.
The horror begins when a fugitive man, covered in blood that is not his, is admitted into Dr. Elizabeth Santer's care. He claims he has no memory of who he is, what he is running from and, as Elizabeth soon discovers, no explanation for his intimate knowledge of the world of espionage, elite special forces...and terrorism.
Events spiral beyond Elizabeth's control when she is abducted by her charge, who evades both police and army in a terrifying chase to an unknown destination. Elizabeth, is kept guessing whether this man is an inncocent soldier, a mad killer or a vicious terrorist...and the suspense grows when it becomes clear that their pursuers have hidden motives of their own.
The reader is captivated until the final, unexpected conclsion which successfully ties up a novel that will surely have a claim to be the best thriller of the year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor ending 25 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I had already read Katherine John's Trevor Joseph series which I thoroughly enjoyed. Although the synopsis of By any Name sounded my type of book I was reluctant to buy it because It was not going to be a traditional who done it murder mystery.

I enjoyed the beginning and middle of the book. However the reason for John West,s memory loss was a bit far fetched. Also I did not like the ending very much. Ideally by the end of a book I like all the loose ends tied up. I felt Katherine John ended the book to quickly with to many questions unresolved.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There were lots of things I liked about this book. I liked the two main characters and I liked the original premise, liked the first part of the book, liked the last part but somewhere in the middle it just seemed to go on and on.
On the whole I recommend it and I will probably read another by the writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling read!
A chilling read, quite horrifying in parts, but yet again a very good story. I like it when these stories are set in Wales as it all seems more familiar. I enjoy that in a book.
