Book Description

First published in 1945 and comprising a compilation of fascinating primary accounts of airborne combat as told by the very men who fought in the action, ‘By Air to Battle’ is the official history of Airborne operations by British Paratroops in World War II. Spanning the introduction of the Central Landing Establishment to the end of the war, we follow the heroic exploits of the British First and Sixth Airborne Divisions. Never before available in ebook form ‘By Air to Battle’ is an inspiring and at times very comic description of the true events that took place at such historic conflicts as Arnhem, the Rhine, Normandy and Bruneval as well as the Airborne forces in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. This is a must-read for any military history enthusiast.

3.0 out of 5 stars great book, terrible transcription 20 Aug. 2012

The contribution of the British 6th airborne division to the Normandy invasion has been given a low profile in recent years, probably being further overshadowed by the excellent "Band of Brothers". So after reading many books and articles on the subject I was pleased to come across this book, written nearer the war and therefore fresher in the memories of the writers.
The stories highlight the bravery and sacrifice of these lightly armed, dogged heroes.
However, the transcription to Kindle is terrible with typo errors on virtually every page. After a while this just became annoying and took the shine off what should have been an excellent and informative read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The classic account of the Britsh paras in WW2 13 Feb. 2012
The official history of the British paratroops in WW2 appeared in 1946 soon after the war had finished. It's a comprehensive and detailed overview of the amazing contibution made by these extraordinary men. Highly recommended as a document from the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Military History 25 April 2013

This book was written just after WW2 and is an insightful look at the development and subsequent use of airborne troops in action. It suffers from lack of proof reading after the original text was scanned, F seems to have been a problem so "fire" comes out as "tire" in numerous places.
A good read for the history buff

History of British Paras in WW2. From inception to raids on Bruneval Sicily Africa and of course Arnhem and more. Written shortly after the war, some things are still secret in the book, but a good read nevertheless.
There is humour, action, and Pathos, in the book. Any budding historian should read this.
