From the Publisher

1. BUYER’S GUIDE

A detailed step-by-step guide to the mechanics of buying a property in France, the Buyer’s Guide explains every stage of the legal and financial process, helping you to navigate your way successfully through the conveyancing system and avoid any pitfalls and problems. It also provides an overview of the French economy and property market.

What’s the best way to go about finding a property? How do you obtain a survey? How much deposit will you have to pay? The Buyer’s Guide tells you exactly what you need to do, and which professionals to turn to, from appointing a lawyer and the best strategy for managing the sterling/euro conversion to minimise risk to finalising the contract. It demystifies the whole process and offers advice on every aspect of finding, purchasing and financing a home, including advice on taxes, relocating and renovating.

Living and Working in France
A guide to living in France, covering everything from the healthcare system and education to obtaining a driving licence, utilities and internal communications.

Real Life Stories
Inspirational case studies feature people who’ve bought a property in France either to live in, to let or run as a business. Read about their experience and share in their top tips for making a successful purchase. Whether you’re buying for business reasons, a new life or maybe to retire, our real life stories will give you valuable insight.

2. PROPERTY GUIDE
Information-packed profiles of the 15 regions of France and the top 90 property hotspots: what it’s like to live there, key attractions, and an overview of the economy and housing market, looking at property price trends. Regional price guides, sourced from leading estate agents, illustrate the type of property available in each area, from affordable rural cottages – ideal for renovation – to large, all-mod-cons, modern villas in fantastic locations with spectacular views. Divided into price bands, the guides show you what type of property you can expect to get for your money.

Fact-packed profiles of each hotspot provide information on the rental market and housing prices, and the particular pros and cons of each hotspot. The profiles also include essential facts about population, local transport, schools and healthcare.

3. BUYER’S REFERENCE
An invaluable quick-reference section featuring specially compiled price matrices enabling you to compare at a glance average house and apartment prices across the different regions of France, as well as monthly rental income. There’s also a glossary of useful terms, an extensive directory of contacts, and an index of estate agents.

Disappointing 1 Oct 2005
By Chris
The first part of this book comprises a series of relatively gushing articles with limited real information, some by people with a vested interest in selling you property. In many places where it comes to hard facts e.g tax rates, you are referred to 'seek professional advice'.

The second, larger, part of the book goes through regions of France, which is useful if you are undecided on where to look, and the section on transport links is genuinely useful.

I'd look eleswhere for something more solid.

I have been looking into buying a 2nd home in France and have read a number of books on the subject. After reading the Red Guides book I felt compelled to leave a review as it really helped clarify the processes and legalities of buying a property abroad. The book begins with an overview of the property market in France and is bang up to date in its detail. Each chapter concentrates on a different area or region and goes into detail in to the infrastructure, transport links and property price guides - all essential information when you are thinking of buying to let or, like me you want to be able to visit as frequently and as cheaply as possible. The book has helped me to select the region most suited to my needs and lists great local contacts who have helped with the legal and finacial side of things. If you are looking at buying a home in France, for investment, holidays, retirement or to let this book is a great starting point - highly recommended.

This book is great for dreamers and do'ers alike. I have been thinking about owning my own home in France and letting it out until i can afford to move there permanantly. The book starts off by giving you a really up to date run down on the economy and legalities of buying in France and then takes you through each area with objecive information on what you can get for your money. the 'We did it' stories are inspiring yet practical and informative and I felt that it was much easier to understand and more practical and detailed than some of the other titles on the market.
