Product Description

Part of the new "Buying a House series from Vacation Work, this new title tells readers all they need to know about buying property in France including raising finance, how to find and deal with estate agents, what inspections and surveys are necessary, conveyancing, exchanging contracts, arranging removals, and getting power and water connected. It also gives essential information for after moving in, from how to deal with builders to making money from the house by renting it out.
To help readers find their ideal home the book covers the entire country, not just those regions already popular with expatriate buyers, explaining the characters of the different areas and the types and price of property available there. Special features include full coverage of the up-and-coming areas for those who want to be among the first to discover the new Provence.
Everything one needs to know to buy a house in France whether for use as a base while working abroad, as an investment, or as a second or retirement home.

One of the best things about this book is the way it is beginner-friendly- it does not assume that you already know a lot about France and theFrench way of life. It begins with a thorough rundown of the French way oflife, from motoring regulations and the telephone system to the healthsystem, including useful stuff such as whether your computer will workthere.
I personally know Brittany and Normandy pretty well but not much else so Iwelcomed the regional guide to the other parts of the country – the typeof countryside, how built up they are etc, which gives exactly what youneed to know on the types and prices of houses there and also lesspractical but fun info on regional food specialitities.
But the heart of the book is all its detail on actually buying a house, from finding and dealing with estate agents to the buying procedure. Withthis book I feel forewarned about the differences between buying a housein France and in the UK (for example, I now know that it is very rare toget a survey done before buying a house in France) and know what to expectonce I start house-hunting in earnest!

This book is fantastic and informative. I have never travelled to France and have found the book answers a lot of my questions. Also it contains many further contacts e.g. schools, government buildings ect. that we would need to contact before beginning to move. Excellent book for a novice france house buyer.

Comprehensive 17 July 2006

One of many books on buying a house in France that I have bought since embarking on the road to home ownership in France. This one, like many, is written from a primarily British perspective, but it contains enough general information to make it a useful addition to your library. It has a particularly good section describing the various regions in France (and what a variety!) for those not yet decided where to settle.

informative for the right person 29 May 2006

This book is written from a BRITISH perspective, so comparisons and examples of protocol won't make much sense to most Americans (myself included). There are, however, shorter sections relating to Americans moving to/living in France, so skip the parts that explain what EU citizens need to do and you'll probably find a paragraph about what you need to do. Some knowledge of architectural and/or building terms will be helpful, but is not entirely necessary.

Still, overall this is an informative and surprisingly enjoyable read.
