Review

'This book provides a clear, step-by-step guide to what happens both before and after the auction. For anyone taking their first step in buying a property by auction, this is an excellent initial investment.' --The Letting Update Journal --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Howard Gooddie is head of auctions at Longden and Cook Commercial in Manchester. His father and grandfather were auctioneers before him and he grew up immersed in the world of auctions. During his boyhood he was a 'lotter' and clerk at many of his father's auctions and his first property sale was in 1957 at the age of 25.

Longden and Cook were the first firm to pioneer holding auctions simultaneously in London and Manchester, show pictures electronically of the properties being offered, introduce bidding paddles to property auctions and place the full catalogue on the Internet.

Howard Gooddie has conducted more than 210 composite auction sales and has offered nearly 13,000 lots, inspecting virtually all of them himself. He is a member of the auctioneering skills panel of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and is a Master of Arts from Cambridge University with a Certficate of Proficiency in Estate Management. He also holds a Diploma in Town Planning and is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

An interesting guide which takes some of the mystery out of the world of property auctions.

Whether you are looking to buy a new home for yourself, or purchase property to develop/let, this book clearly illustrates the pros and cons of buying at auction. It assumes no previous knowledge of the subject and presents a clear step by step guide to what happens both before and after the auction.

The author is clearly well versed in the world of auctioneering. He does an excellent job of explaining the auction process and exposes tactics used by auctioneers and bidding strategies.

5.0 out of 5 stars FIrst class book for investing in auctions. 16 April 2007
Format:Paperback
I found this book as a basic one for buying property in auctions. I found this is the basic for build a strategy and a business plan. No doubt you cannot start to invest in auctions without this book. One of the best so far I read, you can avoid gross mistakes and you can save thousands in auctions and avoiding pitfalls. One of the most interesting list is the list of auctioneers as well as the details of organizing a business plan before the auction, have ready the bank in your side, the valuation, the project and the survey, read it, it is fantastic, you cannot ask really more for the price.
