First heard the Alleluia on the programme Baroque Spring, and did not know who were singing it, but found this disc on Amazon, and although preferring the version I heard, still think this is excellent and should be better known. Would like to know who performed the original version though.

The best choral Buxtehude recording available 9 Nov 1998
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I have had the pleasure both of performing (on the harpsichord) and listening to many of the works of Dietrich Buxtehude, and I wish to emphasize that I have never heard any performance of his music as compelling as this recording. I am astonished that the Gramophone reviewer suggests that the performance "lacks polish"; I invite the listener to compare these amazing performances with the very nice, but relatively lackluster, performances by Ton Koopman of a great many of the Buxtehude canatatas. The sense of spiritual joy that Immerseel finds in this music, and the delightful nuances of rhythm and phrasing that he extracts from the performers, is without equal in the recordings of this music. This is a desert island recording!

Bravo! Waiting for the encores! 2 Feb 2001
By Adam Cole - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Ever wondered who influenced JS Bach in his early days? Bach once walked over 200 miles just to hear Dietrich Buxtehude at the organ. And through the flawless intonation of the musicians, the taut sense of ensemble, and a flowing, emotive reading by Immerseel, this recording reveals a bit of the magic that motivated Bach to undertake such a journey.
I find the first track, "Nimm von uns..." especially transporting: with the inexorable march of its elegant, wistful cadences; the emotional tension of its cloying, sinuous chromatic passages; and its keening suspensions with soprano notes like spun-gold laser beams that stretch and then blissfully resolve; this reading embodies throughout an electric luminosity that directly engages the soul of the listener.
The remainder of the recording is of similar quality in terms of the choral and string ensembles, but incorporates vocal soloists whose appeal is unavoidably much more subjective. The bass was my favorite; the tenor, a bit bright, perhaps. I was impressed; you'll have to make up your own mind. But--bottom line--if this disc can't move you, it's hard to see how any other Buxtehude recording could suffice to do so.

Thank you Jesus 6 Dec 2001

This is one of the most beautiful choral CD's that one could hope for. The music is sublime - cantata settings by one of the finest mid-Baroque composers - and the performances are of a luminosity that takes the breath away. I have taken the piece Jesu meines lebens leben and put it on repeat to listen to it over and over in a meditative way. It is here where the earthy Lutheran spirituality of Buxtehude comes into play. Even if one doesn't understand German, the steady pulse of the ground bass captures one, as does the text "Jesus I thank you a thousand time a thousand" (English and German quite close here).
I am also familiar with the Ton Koopman collection on Erato, which uses soloists throughout. I find these performances slightly less inspirational than the present one but it too warrents repeated listening to really appreciate the depth of this wonderful music.

Sublime 3 Mar 2008
By bronton - Published on
Format: Audio CD
As an organist and church musician, I have loved the music of Dietrich Buxtehude for years. For those listeners who enjoy the cantatas of Bach, this CD is a must as Buxtehude was one of Bach's greatest influences. This collection of six cantatas is the perfect place to start. The singers and instrumentalists do a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of these sublimely beatiful pieces. After you listen to this CD several times you will no doubt have a favorite cantata. They are all beautiful, but my personal favorite is "Herzlich Lieb Hab Ich Dic, O Herr". Perhaps this is because it is the only cantata in a major key on this CD. Or perhaps it is the exhuberant series of "Amens" near the end. But most of all, it is because track five was what I listened to most during the most difficult period of my life. This album is heaven-sent.

Superb recording. Anyone interested in baroque choral music should own it. And why isn't "Jesu Meins Lebens Leben" more widely known or recorded? It is the highlight of the album.
