A Feast of Imajination and sounds,
By
This review is from: Butterfly Ball & the Grasshopper's Feast (Audio CD)
Finally, after years of searching I have found this wondrous 'feast of imajination, sound and amazing artwork' on CD... My children who are now in their 30s & 40s spent many hours listening to the tape and looking at the book (as I did!) revelling in the majic of Judy Dench and Michael Horderns voices bringing all the fabulous creatures alive. I can still remember them all fondly, vividly and would encourage anyone with children/grandchildren to bring this CD (and the accompanying book)into their lives. It WILL bring so much peasure

A charming part of the Butterfly Ball experience,

In the early 1970s, illustrator Alan Aldridge and poet William Plomer produced a truly gorgeous book based on a story from the early 1800s. The book was a delightful combination of marvellous poems and exquisite artwork. Based on this, Roger Glover assembled an all-star cast and produced an excellent musical version, with new lyrics loosely based on the book. The album, essentially "mellow rock" in flavour, included a hit single ("Love is All"), and was reasonably successful. It has since been re-released on CD, including the lovely song "Little Chalk Blue" for which room could not found on the original LP.
Recently, I became aware of this CD, a narration of the Plomer poems by Judi Dench and Michael Hordern. As you would expect from such consummate performers, the narration of the poems is superb, and brings wonderfully to life all of the animal characters from the book. But what I had not expected was the truly delightful musical backing, which, throughout, is appropriate, inspiring and beautifully performed. Together, narration and music bring the story to life in a way that I can only describe as delightful. The Butterfly Ball is wonderful and will appeal to adults and youngsters alike. I really cannot recommend this CD too strongly.

Such a Ball and such a Feast!,

This review is from: Butterfly Ball & the Grasshopper's Feast (Audio CD)
I first heard this stunning concept in 1975, when a friend bought the newly released record. I was captivated by the narration; the beautiful tones of Judi Dench complementing the marvellously fruity voice of Michael Hordern; the wonderful original and haunting music,an unforgettable perfect package.
My wife and I bought the album just after our wedding in 1979, together with the illustrated book. All 3 of our children were introduced to the Butterfly Ball and loved it. For over 20 years I have searched in vain for it to be released on CD and now at last I have found it. Thank you Wizard Presents; a superb re-mastering of a masterpiece!
