"Butterflies and Elvis" is the debut album from Iceland's Johanna Gudrun Jonsdottir (known simply as 'Yohanna')

Yohanna, who came 2nd in this years Eurovision Song Contest with her amazing performance of the superb power ballad "Is it true?" (representing her home country, Iceland), has been writing songs for over a decade. (A remarkable achievement for someone who was only born in 1990!)

The album, which was recorded with British songwriter Lee Horrocks and sound engineer Thomas Yezzi, was originally released in early 2008 in her home country and was very well received by her critics. Yezzi described Yohanna as "a young, white Icelandic girl with the soul of a 50 year-old black woman. She's really amazing."

This sums up the whole feel of the album. It's a captivating, lively, yet soulful album filled with beautiful music and lyrics (not forgetting the beautiful voice!) It's a masterpiece of harmonious music and lyrics from someone with so much talent and such a bright future ahead of her. And it's for this reason that it's so difficult for me to criticise any of the songs on the album in any way since each one is excellent in its own way. My favourite tracks on the album are "Beautiful Silence", "Spaceman", "Say Goodbye", "I Miss You" and "Rainbow Girl" If you enjoyed Yohanna's performance on ESC then you will enjoy this album.

Iceland's best kept secret has finally been revealed for the rest of the world to see. I'm sure Yohanna will go a very very long way....

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliance beyond her years 29 May 2009

A stunning introduction, for those outside of Iceland, to an extraodinary young talent. If life's at all fair, Yohanna must be destined for a huge singing career.

Having taken the plunge, not quite knowing what to expect, I've been completely bowled over. To begin with, Yohanna's voice is something very rare indeed, subtly soulful, yet powerful with a clarity and control I've seldom heard before. Beyond that, the quality of the song writing and production is truly impressive. "Beautiful Silence" is probably the stand out track, but the rest are very close behind. Play after play I find new favourites and have had it on repeat in my car(and stuck in my head) for the best part of a week, very unusual for me.

As has been said, if you liked Yohanna's performance in the Eurovision this year, you'll love "Butterflies and Elvis".

To think I don't usually watch the ESC....what a miss this would have been!
