I'm delighted that this classic comedy series,"Butterflies" is coming out on DVD again as the orginal DVDs are very hard to find and the prices have been really steep.
Wendy Craig is excellent as bored housewife Ria,married to the nice but dull, dentist Ben(Geoffrey Palmer)who is constantly at war with his two layabouts Sons, the moody Adam played by a young Nicholas Lyndhurst and the handsome, more open Russell(Andrew Hall)
Ria's mundane existance is changed forever when she meets the handsome Leonard(Bruce Montague)and much of the show involves Leonard pursuing Ria,in one particularly funny encounter,he excuses her of never going anywhere without her shopping bag, leading Ria to empty the contents of her bag into Leonard's car and publicly execute her shopping bag!
Carla Lane's wriitng has never been so mature and well developed,Leonard's chauffer Thomas(Michael Ripper)is a joy with his habit of quoting poetry and the dead pan cleaning lady,Ruby(Joyce Windsor)with her usual opening line,"Its peeing down outside".
In the fourth and final series, there is a darker edge to the comedy/drama,all the usual jokes about Ria's bad cooking are still there but you get Ria saying to Ben and the boys, yes laugh but why am I acting like this?
Ben begins to suspect all is not well too and this level of depth is rare in a sitcom and is why I love the show so much as well as an excellent cast.
I don't know if the 2000 Butterflies one off is included on the DVD set,I do hope so,can't wait for March,to buy this great show!
