Product Description

Thomas Chaloner, just returned from a clandestine excursion to Spain and Portugal on behalf of the Queen, finds London dank and grey under leaden skies. He finds many things changed, including the Government slapping a tax on printed newspapers. Handwritten news reports escape the duty, and the rivalry between the producers of the two conduits of news is the talk of the coffee houses with the battle to be first with any sort of intelligence escalating into violent rivalry. And it seems that a number of citizens who have eaten cucumbers have come to untimely deaths. It is such a death which Chaloner is despatched to investigate; that of a lawyer with links to 'the Butcher of Smithfield', a shady trader surrounded by a fearsome gang of thugs who terrorise the streets well beyond the confines of Smithfield market. Chaloner doesn't believe that either this death or the others are caused by a simple vegetable, but to prove his theory he has to untangle the devious means of how news is gathered and he has to put his personal safety aside as he tries to penetrate the rumour mill surrounding the Butcher of Smithfield and discover his real identity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Continual Spy Romp, 4 Mar 2008

Taking place in the years after the reign of England only Lord Protector (Oliver Cromwell), this cracking third book from author Susanna has been a treat to savour with a protagonist who does his damn best to keep his head when everyone else is losing there's (and sometimes that's more than literal. LOL) Wonderfully creative the series just seems to go from strength to strength as the reader is literally walking the old streets of London with Thomas Chaloner as he does his level best to achieve his current mission. Picturesque and descriptive the reader can literally smell the scents of Old London through the pages as this Cambridge Scholars work continues to haunt you after your first read tempting you to reread as to be honest I'm always seeing something new that I missed on the first read through. If you know a crime fan or a thriller fan then this really is going to be something special for them to savour. A great present to pick up and give for birthdays or celebrations. They truly will thank you for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Third in Thomas Chaloner Mysteries, 21 Jan 2008
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)

Susanna Gregory is the pseudonym of a Cambridge academic who was previously a coroner's officer. Her series of mediaeval mysteries have gained a formidable following. This book is the third in the Thomas Chaloner mysteries. The are set in Restoration London. She is also the author of the ever popular Matthew Bartholomew series of books. She is one of my favourite authors

The title character, Thomas Chaloner is a reluctant spy, initially cajoled into the service of the Secretary of State, John Thurloe. This occurred when Thomas had recently returned from Holland and was in desperate need of work. Thurloe recommended Thomas to the Earl of Clarendon, but in return insisted that Thomas keep him informed of any plots that may be brought against him.

There is a more than adequate synopsis for this particular book provided by Amazon, so it is not necessary for me to add anything regarding the storyline of the book. Except perhaps to say that the author captures the period beautifully and her main character Thomas Chaloner is becoming more likeable with every volume. Whether he will ever achieve the status of Matthew Bartholomew in the mind of the reader, only time will tell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking! Absolutely Cracking good!, 19 Jun 2009

This book is truly excellent - everything an historical murder mystery should be, and more.

I like Thomas Challoner even better than her medieval chappie (which is still a firm favourite of mine). But this period is fascinating, rumbustious and so impeccably researched it's a total delight to read.

...and I say this as something of an amateur expert on mid 17thC social & military history! Nothing seems out of place, and everything fits so seamlessly into the story.

It's a great ride, the pace is perfect, from fast-action sequences to more philosophical and social rambles. I love the detail. I love the way we really get a feel for Challoners life. I even felt hungry on his behalf at one point!! (although not for rat stew! Argh!)

Very twisty plot as ever, a touch of the Shardlake style here - and that's intended as a compliment. Indeed, I think those two are my top favourite history-mystery authors at the moment- and fabulous as a brain-teaser.

The earlier two books are reccomended to be read first, but not absoluitely neccessary as the story is very stand-alone, thankfully. Now I can't wait to get hold of her fourth book in this series!
